Clarkston is correct, environmentalism is a political platform in which we ought to alter our lifestyle downward.

A new line has been crossed when network news sides with this propaganda of junk science.

Clarkson is the man. I love his irreverant humor and clever stabs at the political norm.

I love it. I do not believe in global warming from a man-made point of view. Is it possible? Of course, but only a small degree. Global warming is being defined as a man made event. When in reality it is the earth's cyclical climatic change. It's gone through "global warming" and "cooling" numerous times.

If only we could get the cows to stop farting....

I drive a Ferrari. I love my Ferrari. I hope we all get to keep driving our gas-guzzling, internal combustion Ferraris. BUT, that doesn't mean I must accept no responsibility. Global warming is MOST ABSOLUTELY, UNQUESTIONABLY accelerated dramatically by MANKIND. You deniers are just simply, plainly wrong on this one. Of course, most of us may not actually experience some catastrophy directly related to GW, so it's easy to be dismissive, but in our children's life time it is exceedingly likely.

I'm not an "eco-nut" by any stretch of the imagination, but I do care for the environment (it's the only one we've got, unless you believe we're going to set up big tents on the moon!)

We have every reason to work very hard now towards more use of sustainable resources, cleaner energy and the like. There really is no reason a family of 3 needs 4 cars *EDIT* (and NO reason any of those four should be a Hummer or an Escalade -- those are just stupid vehicles), no reason we should continue to rely on pollution-belching industrial plants if we can find alternate technologies, no reason to ignore the fact that pollutants in the air have exploded (absolutely exponentially) since the industrial revolution (and even more in our very recent history).

Maybe if we tackled some of these bigger issues, we wouldn't worry about not being able to drive our Ferraris for ever.

    Cheers,
    J.

Dont look at it as global warming.

Look at it as 'Ice-Age Prevention'.

Now that's a silly statement ... a family of 3 could have 25 cars and still only drive 3 (max) at a time.
As for the "just stupid" vehicles, ask my passengers that were standing in the back on my Ranger XtraCab last weekend if a big truck such as a Hummer or Expedition is really stupid ...

On this subject, I'm agnostic, shall we say. I believe both sides are biased and no one is telling the truth because no one knows the truth.

    I have similar feelings.

Global warming is certainly something we need to keep an eye on but I think the doomsday'rs are over-reacting. Clarkson makes a good point in that making a significant change immediately would likely require a significant step backward in quality of life or a huge step forward in technology. Unfortunately, the technology to maintain our quality of living while reducing the impact on the environment would be prohibitivebly expensive and would therefor require government subsidizing or would not be worth pursuing because people would be unable to afford it.

    1) What are we in the US and UK going to do about the billions of Indians and Chinese who are experience higher standards of living than ever before and driving more cars than ever before? China is likely to eclipse the US in petrol consumption in the near future.

    2) What about the police who drive big V8 Crown Vics and Dodge Magnums around all day, burning tank after tank of petrol? I've talked to officers who said that driving 200 miles every day, 5 days a week, is not out of the ordinary.

    3) Think about how far people drive to get to work, how much time they sit in traffic jams. Can we really expect Joe Schmo who has a $200,000 job in the city to settle for $100,000 job out in his 'burb just to help reduce climate change by driving 50 fewer miles every day? I'm always amazed to look on eBay and see a 2005 BMW with 46000 miles on it. What can we do to remedy that situation?

    4) Are people ready to give up many of the luxuries to which we've become accustomed?

My doomsday situation is not so much the polar ice caps melting as it is the threat of declining free market and capitalism and the growth of government mandates and shift towards socialism necessary to appease the enviro-mongers.

    Bingo! I totally agree.

As for the person who thinks nobody "needs" a Hummer or Escalade... The same could be said for your Ferrari. Nobody NEEDS a Ferrari. By your logic, perhaps we should at least ban 12-cylinder Ferraris? Be careful what you wish for... It's a slippery slope when we start dictating what people can have or not have. Who or what do you think might be next???

Actually that's the best view I've seen. The truth usually lies b/w the lines, where no one can see it.
