An uncle of a friend of mine who lives in Rome bought his new red Daytona back in 1970, and has owned it ever since. In 1989-1990 people were harassing him with absurd offers for his car - as much as 500.000 of today's Euros!!! But he loved his baby and never gave in to greed, he kept the car.

35 years later, today he's a nice old retired gentleman who still enjoys the Daytona with his wife on weekend breaks or just to meet old friends at the bar.

    Now, that's true Ferrari passion!!

I wonder how many genuine "one-owner" classic Ferraris are still out there? Any ideas? I bet that very, very few resisted the temptation of the crazy money of the late '80s.

    Andrea,
wonderful, what a great story. All my respect to this gentelman! Yes, sadly most couldn`t resit the (un)serious crazy offers in the late 80th.
I realy would love to see a pic from the gent together with his Daytona.

That is some Ferrari-lovin' right there. And he probably doesn't even love the car on the mere fact it is a Ferrari, but just because he genuinly feels it is a great car (and it is).

I don't know if I would succeed in resisting the temptation. But then again, I do know that I would spend excessive money on Ferrari's anyway.

Wolfgang, this gentleman is the uncle of Giovanni, my Elise-driving friend who will join us in Tuscany. We can ask him about his uncle's Daytona, and ask him to take a picture for FChat next time he has a chance to visit him.

Is the car for sale now? Would he like to swap it for a very comfortable Porsche?

I think he will die before he sells it. No chance guys! Unless you want to wait long enough and then contact the family telling them that you're willing to help them get rid of grandad's old junk... ;)

I heard from my Maserati Club USA friends of someone that found a Bora for sale as part of an auction "lot" which included old furniture and various household junk. The old man had died and his family didn't have a clue what a "Masarahti" was, they just thought it was a cheap foreign old Camaro-lookalike. Apparently one Maserati enthusiast from NY got tipped off, went to the auction (somewhere in the US redneck-backcountry) and got the Bora (original, low mileage and really in good nick) for less than the price of a used Golf... no-one else bid for it!!

    Oh my god, thats wonderful!
Sounds like the story of the Porsche 917 Le Mans found in garage a few years ago. Still stock all original incl. the old tyres (for sure without the factory engine). The 917 is now on restauration in Germany and they found an original 917 engine in Canada:)
We will see him back on track next year!

How much was paid for the 917? Surely not as cheap as the Bora?

I remember the 917 story. It was one of the cars used in the filming of the movie Le Mans. Apparently the engines had to go back to Porsche as they could still be used in other race cars. The body just ended up in a farmers barn.
