At a porsche meet today, someone insisted you are entlitled to a one time EPA/DOT exemption and can bring in ANY car, regardless of age, from overseas, without EPA/DOT compliance, once in a lifetime. I never heard of that. he was adamant. Is this for real? Too good to be true, I say, urban legend.

There used to be a one time EPA waiver if car met DOT but I think there no longer is:

I tried to learn a little more about that as I have heard that too.

I never learned anything more about it other than being a rumor, but what I did learn is that once a car is 25 years old, it can pass through the Federal DOT/EPA w/o a conversion. In otherwords a 288 GTO made in 1985 can be brought into the US in 2010 w/o that lenghty and costly convestion process.

Sorry doesnt really help other than to say I tried and failed to learn more.
