Taxis that pull out of active traffic to pick-up/drop-off customers.

It's so simple, too ... just pull over at a corner, into a fire hydrant space, into a loading zone, ANYTHING...just don't come to a full-stop right in the middle of the lane. Each one that does this snarls traffic for at least 30 seconds - 1 minute down the entire length of a block.

instead of traffic cameras at lights, install phasers/disrupters/disintegrators.

    Red light runners? no more
    Block the box? No more
    Speeders? No more.

Serious: Real-time traffic conditions fed into a central GPS system to update alternate route info on your GPS navigation system.

Make all taxis be mid-sized cars or smaller. Those boats they drive are just too big. Also, actually ENFORCE traffic laws against taxi drivers. I can't tell you how many times those f-ing idiots make left turns from the right lane of 6 lane wide avenues, stop in the middle of traffic to pick up or drop off, turn without signalling, change lanes without looking, etc. It's bad enough that 99% of them don't even speak English, but they drive like there are NO rules whatsover.

IMHO, taxis are 90% of the problem, mostly because they just don't obey any of the rules. Trucks are also a problem, but less so than taxis.

Oh, one more thing -- really crack down on double parking. Allow NO double parking whatsoever. Tow away all double parked cars and CRUSH them for scrap. Double parking on cross-town streets makes driving almost impossible in some neighborhoods.

Funny you should ask this, I have a friend who is an attorney (god help us) and he has stated on many occasions that the only way to improve traffic everywhere is that each driver should be able to shoot one person per month when they do something dangerous or stupid or something that just pisses you off. So his rationale is that in a few weeks hardly anyone would be left, thus traffic would be better. When I told him he might get whacked as he drive like a nut also, he said no way, attorney's would be exempt from getting greased. AHHH attorneys.

My $.02 is the cabbies, they are the real problem no doubt, hey when you come from a country with no traffic laws and we let them hit the NYC streets with almost no enforcement it is bound to be a free for all.

You guys could always MOVE TO OHIO ;) ;) ;)

Maybe a little boring compared to the Big City - but let me tell you - there are no driving issues at all... and the open roads... :)

You could always visit NY once in a while - and get your fix...

I feel like the Ohio Board of Travel...

Traffic in America is a problem. Every dip**** with a license thinks he knows how to drive a car. What we need is less cars, I say we make Staten Island into one huge parking lot.

Speaking of which, the traffic this morning at rush hour was RIDICULOUS! Usually, I can get to work on the Vespa dodging traffic and all in about 15 minutes. This mroning it took me 25, because there were just soooo many cars that it was insane! Yesterday was similar too.

I'm with Noah, make the Taxis stop on the side of the road AND makke them use one lane instead of two (they usually straddle the line between two lanes so they have more options).

My vote goes for automatic ticketing of anybody that blocks an intersection by automatically charging ahead without checking to see if there is actually space for them on the other side. They end up sticking out when the light turns red and therefore one or more lanes of traffic traveling perpendicular to them gets blocked, choking up traffic all the way.

    Frustrating as heck.

LOL - 8 hours of sleep and 1 hour of fun would be nice. But how would we pass the other 15 hours of the day Rich?!

Come on, admit it - you know you secretly have New York envy! - ;)

    When are you here next?

It's pedestrians. That herd-like fence they stuck up by the Port Authority was brilliant. It keeps straglers, bums, and schmucks from just stepping into the road from any point they please. If pedestrians are controlled, that is, they can only cross where they're supposed to, the roads become so much clearer. I can't tell you how many times traffic flow is interrupted because some ***** dashes across the street making all cars stop.

And then once one guy dashes across, a stream, like a train of people follow and every car sits and waits, basically until the light turns red, and then green again. It's very frustrating. And then of course secondly, cabbies.
