A piece broke off the brass contact some time past, the "knob" came off. I should still have the knob part, but have not found it yet. Is there a preferred source for re habilitating controls. TIA

    Tom Shaughnessy has a guy.

Verell at Unobtainium also does them.

I don't know if either guy rehabs them if parts are missing.

Talk to Lyle Tanner at www.ferraripartsexchange.com (they're in Sacramento I believe) - he has a guy he sends turn switch assemblies to. I had mine completely done by them last year- turn signal lever was broken off at base, and nothing, including JB Weld, would hold it. They completely remolded the broken base piece and did a full electrical rework at the same time. Was $1000. (!) but no probs since. The good news for you is that it sounds like you have the missing knob- if not, God help you, esp if your car is an L-series, though the appearance of the remaining (prob turn signal) knob suggests that it's a later car.

    Grazie tanto mate!
Here's another for you, if you care to listen, the black charred piece is what's left of the main fuse in the engine compartment. One night slowing down looking in the rear view mirror, I saw smoke. Switched off opened engine compartment and blew like crazy at the flames from the fuse. All I had was a can of pepsy so I pulled the ring and sprayed the fire. It went out. Then what? How to get going? I bent what was left of the contacts and pushed the ring pull around them. Turned the key and it started. After a few minutes running no glow. smell, smoke or fire so I drove home. I did not use the car for a week and believe it or not I forgot all bout it. Sometime later I went in for my regular oil change...I think I still have the ring pull...somewhere

Would be nice to have the fuse box base made of bakelite instead of plastic!

It's scary stuff! I had a piece of lightweight steel fashioned to fit in front of the engine compartment insulation. Just as an extra precaution. Painted it black. I looks a lot better than old freyed insulation.

The Vitaloni turn signal/light/wiper column stalk assemblies are known to fail at the "hinges".

The same problems were found in Maseratis of similar years and not identical. Private supplies were exhausted and retailers were selling NOS at $2,000.00 so it was easier to fabricate a repair of another material.

I wasn't worried about it for the Dino as my records show Dino stalk assemblies cost $175 in 1994...it looks like I should have picked up a few...

Now just be careful not to bang them with your knee or stress them.

I had EXACTLY the same fire occur- sooty black smoke and flames coming out of the engine lid vent holes, burning what was left of the deteriorated black OEM foam isulation on the firewall. Had it out with a Halon exting. within 30secs or so. I had not seen my wife, the passenger at the time, move so fast in 30 yrs, as she bailed out! Minor superficial burns on regional engine parts and parts of the lid. The good news is that State Farm covered this on my zero deductable comprehensive (about $4K or so I recall), and it gave me the opportunity to do some "while the engine is out stuff" too (there's always a list, as you know).

The Alternator fuse box is inline with the ammeter and all the current shorting through that fuse box can also cause fires in the dash at the ammeter.

With this advance warning and historical knowledge of repeated failures, has anyone persued the ammeter gauge upgrade in this thread?

Last I saw the dino ones were approaching $1000.00. Hopefully I can get it sorted for less!

Synchro - one small correction to your comment quoted above. The current flowing through the firewall fuse from the alternator is the SUM of the current flowing through the ammeter to the battery and current that the alternator is supplying to the main bus. Hence, the ammeter generally sees less current than the alternator is producing.
