What would the board's opinion of worth be on a 1994 spider that started life as a rental car, and had 15k miles put on it from 1994 to 2002. No records prior to 2002. 2002 to present, couple owners, all services done and proper maintenance performed, backed up by all records. As of 2008, 76,000 miles, and although is in good condition, is no show queen. Now how would it affect the value if the records were all by a reputable shop, vs all performed by the owners, with parts reciepts to back it up. PPI shows motor in good shape. Yes, this is a hypothetical vehicle, so don't think toooo much. Just trying to see what a general consensus would be. After reading here for a while, I know the consensus is to find the best car you can, but I'm torn, as I know mine will be a driver, enjoy tinkering, and I'm not sure a super low miles pristine garage queen would allow me to enjoy her being on the road as much as a driver would. TIA...

well the good news is that the engine is in good shape. for a car like that, i would want to know when the last major service was done and what all was done to it.. IMO, if the engine is in great shape, major done with anything else that needed work in it, the miles dont matter (although some would disagree do to resale etc, but hey, if you get it cheap enough, who cares)

if you say that it is no beauty queen? how bad of shape is it in. keep in mind, trying to fix every little thing will cost you a pretty penny. replacing a bad top would run at least $6K-$10K alone! in the long run, it might be better to roll up all that cost into an already good shape car. post some pics if you have any

    Hi,

I have a 94 348 Spider it has done 111,000 KPH and had very little history before I bought it, and it was also not a garage Queen.

If you are happy that the PPI is good, buy it and use it, the rest as they say is history..!!

As long as you service the car when its required, or your happy to DIY thats OK the Brotherhood like owners who are happy to tinker :) Most Ferrari owners would run away from this car as you have said already, if the price reflects the previous use as it should thats the bonus for you.

Yes, the value will be lower than the low mileage Queen, your payback will come from all the fun in driving the car as it should be used!!

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Phil.

I'd say in the high $30k to low $40k range if it is cosmetically challenged and high mileage. You could call it a 348 spider Challenge!

Part of the reason for the 'find the best car you can' advice is exactly this -- there aren't many 'minor' parts on a Ferrari. Mileage is mileage, but when you start replacing tops, switches, electronics, etc., the 'bargain' label starts to fade.

According to the feedback I've got from my car, anything over 30k is "high miles".

People would rather buy a car with a rolled back (sorry, disconnected) odometer than they would an honest deal.

Thanks for the replies, although the rolled back odo statement is kinda dissapointing, although I can see it...

Again, this is a hypothetical vehicle, based on some of the research I have been doing. It seems that some of the items are fairly expensive, and others are in line with the P cars and honduh I have owned, but honestly, I'm not sure I want to spend a couple years looking for the perfect vehicle when after a few track days or cross country trips the front will be sandblasted and the looks ruined, according to few. I just want to make sure that if I spend 35-45k I need to plan to spend another 10-15k to get it right, as opposed to some of the pristine 70k spiders I have seen for sale in my area. I guess I'm trying to figure out what the perfect balance would be. A total dog or a garage queen will probably not fit the bill, but I'm still in the process of figuring it out. I'm guessing that I have about 3 months before purchase. And I know that this is an f-car board, but when the NSX I had ended up totaled due to an idiot motorcyclist at Deal's Gap, I got $500 less than I payed for it 6 years ago (early car). I'm really kinda hoping to pull off the same coup with a 348, excluding maintenance, as I know maintenance will be significantly more. Unfortunatly, I ended up with a "snap ring" NSX, so I ended up spending about the same in maint that I would on a 348, so I go into this with eyes wide open. And yes, I also agree with the whole "car as an investment, but a driver" thing, so want to be realistic in my thoughts, which won't prevent a purchase. I also know how I was when it came to having fun out in the car but having the car out of sight, and don't want to be paranoid about going out and leaving it in a parking lot while I enjoy a night out. I'm excited about becoming a part of the brotherhood, and looking forward to helping out with DIY stuff, which will probably mainly consist of steps to take to keep from f'ing stuff up... :)
