First let introduce myself here for those who don't go the the other threads. I'm a 1977 308GTB owner since 1999 and also a Mondial owner since last year. I like both of my cars. I'm now considering the buy of a TR and the cars I'm looking are the low priced ones. I'm a DIY guy. Engine out service is not a problem for me and I know diff will have to be done sooner or later.

I presently have two cars in the crosshairs. An 87 with newer 18'' wheels and tires that has a color combo and looks that attracks me a lot black/tan but with higher mileage and look more neglected on close up. US car with mouse belts.

The other one is less attractive in color yellow/black 1990 with stock wheels and older tires(but in good shape) with less than half the mileage and look a little more pampered.
Both have tools, books, jack, spare etc. Canadian car with reel belts and no knee pads.

There would be a difference of about $5000 between the two by the time the're home.

Should I buy a TR? And which one?

    Lets hear opinions!

normaly a ferrari has to be red :)

but if you go to a car meeting with a red ferrari nearly nobody cares about your red one. but if you have a yellow one all looking at this car.

so if you are a "racer" would be good red TR, but also the police sees you faster always. but also the other drivers on the street see: wow a ferrari and some drive beside of you to watch your car and you can not pass the one in front of you. so only problems then what you nearly never would have with a yellow one.

so if your other 2 ferrari are red then take the yellow one I would suggest

    Good day Claude,

Although it is important to get one meets your color preferences/desires, I would be more inclined to focus on the technical merits like condition of vehicle, services done, services needed, and ofcourse the PPI results. Make your decision with your 'noggin as opposed to your eyes :) ... otherwise "tears" may result.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Thanks Sam, I know what you're saying. I also know which car is better, I'm just trying to convince myself the yellow one is better because I prefer the look of the black one. The yellow has allready been checked by a good Ferrari guy and he told me it was a good buy. I'm also in the decision of buying or not. That is why I asked for opinions.

I would buy the yellow one without thinking about it. Half the miles, better condition, original car, for a few extra bucks? What is there to think about.

    Just my 2 cents

Hey thanks for your offer Mr.chairman I've been thinking about your car in the past when you were in the 40ish before I bought my Mondial. I know you have a good car I've read about it here. But I really don't want a red TR. Sorry!

You asked if you should buy a testarossa?

Of course you should!!! They are amazing cars!! Loads of torque , huge road presence!!

Maintenance isn´t cheap but since you can do it ... that´s good!!

    You won´t regret it! :) :)

Absolutely buy a TR! I never regretted buying mine. A blast to drive, no other car in the world is as distinctive.

Have I had problems? Yes. Have they been worth the time/money? Yes

I was looking for a yellow one when I found my boring red one 20 miles down the road.
The service records convinced me to go with the red one, yawn.;)

I would still love to have a yellow one.

Did you read my first post? I'm looking at the low priced ones.

But silver is also very nice. I would buy a silver car if it is in my price range. But blue interior is not my preference.

I think you know the answer to your question, regardless of color, always buy the best one you can afford. The testarossa is one of the few cars out there that truly looks spectacular in any color. You can't go wrong.

I tend to go through cars pretty quick, I just have a short attention span in that regard. The TR continues to captivate me and I still have a difficult time explaining how thrilling it is to own such an icon. The Testarossa is one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring cars I have ever driven.

I love everything about it, and you will too.

Good luck, and I look forward to having you join the brotherhood!

...without question, I have a yellow car and it's the envy of all the red owners !

Besides the additional $5k spent is worth the labour, time and cost savings down the road, literally and figuratively.

    Hi Claude
These cars are epic-so wether or not to buy is a resounding hell YES !!! The engine is one of the all time greats.
Assuming both cars are passed as "sound" after PPI I would then choose with my heart-which sounds like the black one to me from your post. Mileage just isn't a concern for me-my UK 89 tr has 35k and I look forward to the day I click past 100k -seriously :)

If the black one is slightly less tidy-again no worries this can be worked through over time. I like both black and yellow-however it will be your car, you will have to look at it every time you open the garage door so if both are good sound cars - choose with the heart buddy :)

All the best- you won't regret it for a second

    Tr boy

Does the black one come with the original wheels? I bought a dead '91 with a set of aftermarket wheels, it looked awful. Finding and refurbishing a set of original wheels and buying tires will eat through the $5,000 alone.

The need for a major service would not keep me out of one car vs. the other, they will all need it sooner or later, it is just a question of timing (I did my own service, it was no big deal). As well, mileage would not concern me too much as long as the car was maintained; regardless of the mileage you will never resell it at a profit. This is a good thing as you can enjoy driving the car.

The cosmetics however are another question entirely. The panel fit on the cars from new is exact, the leather is plentiful and hard to match, the trim bits can be hard to find and expensive. My car runs well but is still in need of some cosmetic work, things like door pockets, the small leather cover under the steering column and other minor trim bits. To fix the mechanicals was not that bad, to fix the cosmetics can be uneconomical, even if the parts can be located.

All that being said, I once had a 308 QV (and now have a Mondial convertible) and can say that a good running TR is the most fun and represents great value for money.

It's not a Ferrari unless it's red. Sorry, love the red on my TR. (Besides.......it has 12 cylinders and that makes for a great sound.
