This isn't a "how do I get rich?" thread. Sorry to all of you breaking out the stomping boots. :)

I searched "wealth" "wealthy" "rich" and "money" before I started this thread.

There seems to be a concentration of people here who work hard. Above and beyond what the average person would consider normal (or healthy). My question is for you, and I'm interested in the opinions of all parties.

I have my "thing" that stands to be a ticket to wealth if I work at it enough. (Not wealth in the 10m + category, but upper-middle class. Lets assume assets of less than 3m after 10 years of work for the sake of discussion.) It will require a second full-time job level of commitment for a minimum of five years.

So I have options. I can continue as I am, super-lower middle class but happy, or start along the path to (relative) wealth and pretty much burn five years getting the rocket off the ground.

In your opinion, F-chatters, is the workaholic life worth the sacrifice? What if it's temporary? If you could choose, would you be the 80+ hour-per-week guy again?

Do it because you have a passion for it, believe in it and enjoy it......don't do it for the $$$$.
In all the years of being in construction.....and working very hard both mentally and physically.....what p**sed me off the most was employees or sub-contractors with a negative attitude, not giving a s***, no pride in workmanship and employees expecting to get paid because they showed up(there just to put in time)..........you will become successful at something that you enjoy and believe in......the money will follow.

I've heard this before but if you're doing something you love and the money never shows up, it's time to do something else. Just sayin' because the money doesn't always "follow". Take it from me. Either that's the case at times or I'm just really freaking stupid.

If you can work smart sometimes you don't have to put a lot of hours in. The key is finding something that will leverage your time. Of course you have to enjoy doing. It's even better if it's just a big game for you and you're getting paid doing it. :)

What made working hard worthwhile was that it was fun and interesting. If you're not excited about doing the work, if the time doesn't fly, then it's going to be very hard to sustain for 80+ hours a week over 5 years. So if your use of the term "sacrifice" applies only to the effort of working long hours, then maybe it's worth it; if the term is meant to capture that the only positive is that you make money, then no, it's not worth it.

Successful people work a lot because they know no other way to live. Sitting still feels unnatural. Their natural momentum is to do more... Success sometimes follows.

Remember this lesson. Wealth requires enormous amounts of ongoing work and sacrifice...

If you assume otherwise, you will be disappointed.

Agreed, but I started my business at 19 and built it up over 23 years (it became my life for a while & in part, cost me a relationship).......then I sold it. I got back into the same business after my non compete clause was over.
There were periods of trials for me......it was not all smooth sailing and usually never is; you just deal with it and move forward. It does take a certain amount of time to allow ones self to achieve success; at least for me.

Wealth and success are measured in many different ways. I was fortunate enough to be a part of building a very successful company which allowed for financial rewards. The true wealth I experienced was having a wonderful and supportive family, and building life long friendships that will far exceed my work career. Did I miss some things during the period of the crazy work hours...yes...would I do it all over again...absolutely !

ask yourself the following questions when trying to "value" the worth of wealth:

would i sell a loved one for a $100 million dollars? i mean, someone hands you a that money in exchange for your loved one being taken away from you forever.

would i sell all friendships for same money? i mean, will you live without companionship in exchange for that money, alone, the rest of your life.

would i sell all of my interests/hobbies/intellectual pursuits/travel for that money? i mean, that in exchange for that money you give up the activities you enjoy, forever.

if you answered "no," then you will have realized there is so much more in life "worth" more than "wealth." the "wealth" of humanity, and of being a fully developed human, far exceeds what dollars can bring...pursue that with vigor!

pursue love, diversity of experience, richness in relationships, personal achievement, memories and the insights that come from self discovery...if you do that you will never want for anything.

and in the end we all end up dead, lying somewhere and sometime completely alone (even if surrounded by people) gasping your last breaths and beginning a journey no one can take with you. at that moment you will know what was "worth" your time on this earth, at that time you don't want regrets.

i know this because i work with dying people every day, and i try to crawl into their lives, it is a strange land to visit everyday, and it has taught me much.

that is my advice to you on this subject.
