I'm looking to see if anyone has any opinions on the TAG Monaco series watches? This is more or less a gift (I may be covering half the cost), and will be my first nice watch. The jewelers have repeatedly told me it's a very nice watch, and that even McQueen had one. I've looked on other forums, mainly 6speed, but they seem to like brands who have watches costing more than $20,000! I can't afford that on any level (I'm at a $4,000 limit), even if Panerai or Patek are the best or one of the best makers.

I'm asking here, though, mainly because everyone around me is more into watches that are bigger and have lots of "bling". I'm not into that, and I don't need that.
The 4 models below, are the ones I'm torn between, however, I'm positive the 2 limited editions are all spoken for and are probably over my price range. (I wouldn't mind though if the 2nd watch had a black strap instead of blue-green, but I'd live with it.)

BTW, if anyone knows of watches that are just as nice, I'm all ears. :)

I like the #2 picture, but I'd rather buy a used vintage one in near-perfect condition...if you can find one.
Cool watch though and always liked the square face.

An original Monaco is around $7500. If you like the style they are nice. I much prefer the Tag Monza.

If I had to give a gift watch in the $4k range (new), unless the recipient was a Steve McQueen nut, I would not choose this watch.

In a heartbeat I would give an Omega Speedmaster Professional 3750.50. That is the "moon watch" as worn by NASA. It is in your price range and possibly the most classic chrono still sold (way cheaper than the Rolex Daytona).

    Best,

I have the blue/Orange "heritage" gulf edition Monaco and absolutely love it - It was my first "nice" watch as well - one thing i can say about it for being my first "nice" watch it has really taught me to appreciate watches a bit more- I get so many compliments on my Monaco about being unusually or never seen before. Im currently in the process of buying my second watch and i feel like im showing my watch more than they are showing me theirs....

But your right most of the Heritage editions ( blue/orange gulf and the Red/Wht/Blue) are spoken for and i doubt youll find one avail however their are several other faces and band combos that are still really good looking ( plus you can always buy TAG replacement bands if you dont like a certain color : note the blue/greenish band )

Pm me if you have any specific questions....

    Well, I do like McQueen.

I did look up the Monza, and I might just consider it now. It's cheaper, and looks just as nice. I learned tonight that these Monacos I posted are also $3,900, over the $2,700 Monaco I saw yesterday. :(

And I have seen the Speedmaster, and it is a great watch. It's been my 2nd choice for a while, now.

If I were looking for my first nice watch, I would check out a Rolex Submariner ND. You should be able to pick up a new one for just over $4K. The Submariner is a timeless design, not too big (40mm), and will look great for many, many years to come.

I have owned a Tag diving watch for more than 10 years. My wife wears one daily and really likes it. Tag Heuer is a great mid-market brand.

That Gulf Monaco is nice (and a good price). I would caution that as your only nice watch, it doesn't really go with everything and is a bit of novelty :)

Since they re-released it ten years ago or so I wanted one, but I've always wondered about the durability of the persplex crystal, its not as scratch proof as sapphire crystal. Anyone out there have experience on that issue? How successful is buffing the crystal out if it scratches? I assume TAG won't give you a new one for free.

Griff (RoadRacer) here got the Gulf edition, it was pretty sharp when I saw it in person.

For your budget I would recommend a different watch to start. I've bought a few in the $300-600 range from Chris (VTC) to add to my collection. The $500 Laco Diver I got from him has gotten more compliments than my Rolex.

Well, to update this, I'm not sure I'll be getting any of the 4 I was looking at. My budget has been reduced to half of what I thought I had. But, I'm not quite giving up. I think I can still be able to afford one of the cheaper TAG Monacos like the one below.

It may not be as flashy, but I think it's still a great looking watch. Come June 13th, Jared's is having a large open inventory of watches from all the well known watch makers, and if I buy then, I should be guaranteed a free $350 watch winder with the watch costing me $2,200 instead of $2,700.

I gave the Monaco Chrono as a gift to my business partner a few months ago and he loves it. Actually, it was hard to let it go, it looked good. The chrono is 43mm it think, while the non-chrono are 40mm. The chrono has plastic (lucite) while the other has saphire crystal. I am thinking of getting one for myself. I like the blue one, goes well in Miami.

BTW, Last month I bought a Rolex Sub for my other business partner and it was 5,800.00 list now, paid around 4,500. Classic.

Sounds like my father's Rolex. He paid a couple thousand bucks for his Daytona, and it's shot way up in value.

I've seen a lot of sites offering the higher priced models for the same as the lower.
But is it safe to buy watches off the web? All the jewelers have told me to be extremely careful because you may not get what you're hoping to get.

The Monaco is very cool watch...especial the Gulf Racing model. My experience with Tag has been pretty poor. The quality really is not what it should be when you spend several thousand dollars on a watch. Plus Tag is part of the LVMH group so if it needs to go in for repair you will be without the watch for a long time.

Also if this is your first luxury watch you should get something that you would want to wear everyday. For me at least the Monaco is a bit too bold for everyday use.

I would look at something like Breitling or the Omega Seamaster (make sure it is the one Bond wore because its movement is a step above other Omega’s)

I would NOT buy a watch on the web. As far as I know there are no luxury brands that have authorized retailers on the web.

I've never heard of Breitling, but the Omega Sasmaster has been 1 of my 2nd choices. I saw the Bond one at Jared's, but she kept trying to sell it due the fact it was a 007 watch, not that it was well made watch.

I am sure you have seen the Brietling adds with John Travolta in magazines. They make really nice watches. The quality of materials is several levels up from Tag.

Yeah James Bond is one of the selling points for the 2531.80.00 Seamaster just like is was for the Rolex Submariner...yes it is a modified ETA movement but the fact of the matter is that the movement in the Seamaster's is a step above most Omega movements. The design is also destined to be a classic just like the Sub, it is truely a beautiful watch.

I have the Monaco chronograph (see photo) The perspex hasn't scratched but I did actually chip it which is annoying, but apart from that its a great watch - I have both straps and prefer the steel bracelet as it looks beautiful when cleaned.
