I am looking at a very nice 1987 328 that is darn near perfect as far as I can tell. All original paint. PPI is scheduled for next week. The only notable rust I saw on the body was some chips on the bottoms of the door edges, really just in the first 12-16" of the bottom edge at the front of the door. See photo below (from passenger door). I am guessing this is maybe due to wear and tear of people getting in and out or perhaps rock chips kicked up from the front tires.

This seems minor and expected to me, but what are other folks' opinions?

In the past when I see rust like this, I'd either carefully sand out the chip and apply primer and touchup paint with an artist brush, or more recently, dab it with rust converter (chemical that converts the rust to iron oxide). Rust converter can really buy the metal a lot of time without much work or disruption to the surrounding area. You can put primer and touchup over the iron oxide if desired.

Note in the photo there are some other dark/stained areas on the lower door base that appear to be skid marks and bleed from that lower gasket shrinking and deteriorating. Not rust. Those gaskets appear to have run right up close to the drain holes originally, but shrunk/contracted quite a bit it seems.

Several approaches, but I've had situations like yours, and I use Evapo-Rust which is a chelate. It is not an acid and does not harm paint. It does not convert the rust (iron oxide) but selectively removes it. In situations like a door bottom where it is hard to dip the part, I've taken a rag moistened with Evapo-Rust and propped it up against the area.

Interesting I'll have to give that a try -- I have a lot of farm tractor implements and am always dealing with rust.

I see they have a gel product, which might work well in this case. Put a little dab over a chip and see how it does.
