Just something I was thinking about during my 30+hour roadtrip from TX to MA...I was thinking to myself that later on if I was able to get a collection of cars together, which Porsches would I want? Then I got to wondering which model is the "essence" of Porsche, the essential car to have that typifies everything the company stands for. I have my own thoughts, and I've read a handful of opinions in mags, but I wanted to hear your thoughts.

How can you forget the greatest lightweight ever made, the 550 spyder. Good list though.

ignoring the ultra-rare models, i'd say the 993 C2S rates pretty high up there in terms of "essence of porsche".

    i don't think the 996s rate.

    '79 930 Turbo

Don't see it on the list. I ampretty sure it was not a twin turbo, but a single.

It was the last high performance (US spec) car you really should know what you were doing before you took it to speed.

Too much junk and amenities on the 90's cars.

Original 911 is probably the essence of 'Porsche' to most people, kind of like the 308 is 'Ferrari'. I'd define the 1984-89 Carrera 3.2 models as the high watermark for the "original 911".

That said, the 993 is a better car for combining luxury and performance, and the Speedster is the coolest car ever made.

Mid to late 80s 930 Turbo. Slope nose or standard. One of the sexiest cars ever to hit the road.

I voted 993TT. But, the essence of Porsche in my life could change if the CGT were to drop by 30-40%! Oh yeah, baby!

I agree with the '73 RS 2.7. I've never driven one myself but I have about a trillion magazine articles absolutely raving about the purity of the car. Seriously, there are several articles every year, sometimes from the same magazines, that bring the car back into the spotlight again and again. It must be pretty special.

I couldn't respectfully disagree more. The f40 is a symbol of raw directness. The 959 is the begining of the numb luxary supercar. If anything; the 959 is the anti-thesis of the f40.

We will have to remain in respectful disagreement then. The 959 to me remains the ultimate Porsche.

    I voted "original 911."

I think "944/968" should include the 924 but all three (924/944/968) substituted with the 928; a much better car than the 924 and without the 928, the 944 and 968 series may never have existed. JMHO. One day I'd like to have a nice shark.
