God forbid you ever get on Oprahs bad side.. Did anyone see this?...
God forbid you ever get on Oprahs bad side.. Did anyone see this? http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/news/celebrity/chi-060126oprah,0,5701563.story?coll=mmx-home_bottom_hedsh2o I think Oprah's responsibility in promoting the truth in todays media is commendable. Probably the best move shes ever made on Television IMO.
Yeah, I saw the show today. It WAS brutal; he got torn up and eaten up by Oprah. I don't know how I feel about it though, it's kind of stupid but at the same time I would be embarrased if I were her.
Yikes. Im cringing just hearing about it. The wrath of oprah is not pretty. The thing about Oprah, is that she vouches for many great authors, she has publicised her association with Mya Angelou many times. So what does her judgement on Frey say about the rest of the Authors she picks? I think she needed to do what she needed to do in order to preserve her righteous seat in the literary world.
Well, she and about 1,000,000 other dumb asses got just OWNED by that guy!!! Then backed him when TheSmokeingGun playes the BS card and said, "Ok, butt wipe, prove it!!!" She backed him when he could not do it and looked like an ass!! Check out her forum and though a lot ot the threads are now gone, she took it up the butt from a TON of her readers / viewers for basically promoting Lieing to the public. No %$@# she was pissed!!!
Wait a second... Oprah (Default: "That happened to me, too!") Winfrey bawled somebody else out for embellishing a story?
The guy wrote a good book even if if it is bullsh*t. But it was good bullsh*t. My wife loved the book. I didn't read it. What real harm did he do? Maybe politics in the future.
Oprah had her chance to distance herself from the book, instead she called into Larry King and further endorsed it. Oprah compounded her public perception problem by going to bat for the guy after the truth had been disclosed. The wise decision for Oprah would have been to acknowledge the controversy and say she was awaiting futher investigation before she could render her thoughts on the issue. A few months later, in an after thought type of way, she could tell her viewers she found the book was not factual and that she no longer endorsees it. The real story in IMO is the fact the publisher took the book at face value and did no fact checking to confirm the contents.
I don't buy for one single second that she feels any different than she did on Larry King. She is only changing her story because so many people came down on her after she defended him. If the majority of folks out there echoed her opinion on King we would be NOT be hearing this from her now. She is just playing to the public.
Is this going to make it harder for my book (when it's finally done) to get into her book club...? Sigh...
i think its funny that i had almost no idea what was going on when i saw her ugly mug on the news tonight, but then they mentioned a book (million something ???) and i remembered a month or two ago through bleary hungover eyes seeing an early-morning interview with some sleazy salesman type guy trying to tell someone on NBC or something that everything in the book was true. didn't pay attention at the time but rememebr thinking 'yeah right buddy i dont believe a werd you're saying now and i have no idea what the book it...'. haha.
That sleazy salesman managed to score himself a nice 10 million bucks. With that kind of money you can BUY dignity. And at $70 per half-hour on weeknights its worth it trust me.
Who cares if Oprahs mad. I bet his sales were dwindling and he let the story out. I think its brilliant. You know how many people are going to buy his book now to find out what he is lying about. He is making a killing. I'd lie about going to jail for 83 days If I could make 10 million bucks.
Publicity is still publicity. I don't watch Oprah and don't know jack about her book club, but this junk has been on the news and now I know the title of his book. An author really can't buy that kind of recognition -- he's leaping for joy under the 'sorrow.' Next up, movie rights....
No such thing as bad publicity in entertainment. . . Who really gives a **** if embellishments are made? A story is much more interesting if details are floral rather than pedestrian. Some say, 'but it's a memoir' and 'the truth will set you free'. Whatever. Frey (sp?) could always claim memory defecits as he was baked for much of his life, right? Additionally, the old adage is that an addict is lying any time he or she is speaking (or in this case, writing). . .
she is not looking out for her viewers, shes looking out for herself, and her image. She could have just made a small statement about it on her show and be done with it. Instead she makes this big hoopla and drags the guy over the coals because SHE got fooled. Fiction books sell..take Harry Potter for instance, its a true story based on fantasy..same with this guy. And according to him, he told everybody that the book was embelished a bit from the start to make it more interesting. I say good on him. He fooled the "Great Oprah" and I really hope sombody does it again. I'm on my way to Chapters to buy the book...I prbbably won't read it, but I want it just because Oprah got OWNED!!
Time out... I really don't see how Oprah would "need" to "save face"... She is, after all, one of the wealthiest people to ever live... She could buy and sell most small countries... I also think she's earned a LOT of respect and was genuinely apologizing to her audience and her book club... She has a LOT of followers and it only makes sense for her to apologize to all the other people that got duped through her, not only because it will help maintain her reputation, but also because it's the right thing to do... I wish she'd run for president like the rumor suggested a while back...
I don't care if the book is real or not. People bought the book because they liked it, not because it was fact or fiction. (The majority of it was fact anyways if you want to know; according to articles I've read on it) Why are there so many people sensative about what happened? The kind of book he wrote was for entertainment, not data for a court case...
so what? you pick the book up from the NON-fiction section... put it in the FICTION section.... read.... enjoy..... whats the big deal?
