Not to turn this into a political conversation, but turning this into a political conversation:

What possible evil does the ACLU do? (This I'm ignorant about)

Heh...I smell a thread that's gonna get moved to Politics & Religion, but hey, lemme fan the flames.

Ok, so Gene and Zipj's comments made me curious as to who could possibly hate an organization out to protect our civil liberties. So I searched on google, and found:

    www.stoptheaclu.org

Ok, so fine, they seem to feel the same way. Let's look at their mission statement:

"Here is a sampling of what America has had to endure thru the ACLU's far left agenda:

    1. Denial of student led prayer in the public schools, colleges and townhall meetings
    2. Partial birth abortion and for that matter, abortion at any time up to delivery
    3. Threats to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance and our money
    4. Removal of monuments and plaques of the 10 Commandments at city, county and state public buildings, courtrooms and schools across America
    5. The imposition of the homosexual agenda in our public schools thru Gay/Straight Alliances and Days of Silence
    6. The imposition of homosexual marriage thru our judicial system
    7. Unfiltered p0rnography on the Internet in our public schools and libraries
    8. Defending terrorists such as those held at Guantanamo Bay, saying they have legal rights instead of being treated as enemy combatants, thus putting America at risk!
    "

Um, maybe I'm crazy, but those seem like very strong objections to fairly plain and simple political issues: The ACLU believes and fights for Freedom of Choice, Separation of Church & State, Freedom of Expression (both with your personal behavior and on the Internet), and Equal Protection. Last time I checked, those were part of our Constitution.

Democrat or Republican, I don't know how you can object to that....

But perhaps I'm missing something, so enlighten me please...

much more radical stuff than all that, such as rights to freedom of speech when it's arguably incitement to violence, supporting the causes of rapists, murderers, etc.

They could be termed, in my opinion, "ideologically stupid." Their heart is (perhaps to some people) in the right place, but they do not pick the right fights to fight.

I'll add: in general, the ACLU, the NYCLU, and the like, have made themselves into a dirty word because they defend "civil rights violations" almost everywhere you look, including many situations in which a vast majority of people would roll their eyes and perceive it simply as meaningless dissent for the sake of dissent, where their claims of governmental abuse are almost laughable.

How they come off is just bitterly anti-government, and so although some of the stuff that they say may be substantively valid, it is so very easily lumped into everything else that they do as this kind of angry rant that I think they are really shooting themselves in the foot sometimes.

Their silence on certain issues is also striking. I spoke to Alan Dershowitz this month (a very famous ACLU member), and he emphasized his displeasure with the civil liberties groups' failure to condemn certain academic intollerances on a specific University's campus regarding the views of students advocating ideas less radical left. The upshot is the groups come off as rather hypocritical, only defending the "civil liberties" of people they agree with.

So....rapists, murderers, etc don't deserve to have a voice? How about the ones who are innocent? Oh wait, I'm sorry. The guilty ones don't deserve a voice, so I'm really sorry but you don't deserve one either.

Or what about their stupid cause to try to seperate church from state? That is a total waste of time! Let's ingrain our children with religious thought begining right when they are little kids!

No, the ACLU is not ideologically stupid. They are ideologically smart and were it not for them, a lot would be different with America today.

    Thought I'd add my 2cents.

A grandfather clock has a pendulum that swings a wide arc. It must apex at both sides to work. With the Pendulum sitting squarely in the middle, the clock isn't a working clock.

The ACLU is just one apex. The goverment is near the other. I loathe both. But I'm darn glad we have both to keep each other in sync.

(I wrote that whole thing just so I could use the word loathe. Love the word loathe :) )

Their "ideologically smart" agendas were set forth by who? Marx and Engels in Communist Manifesto?
The plow of destruction of the “bourgeois claptrap” of the family is where it's at, huh?

I, for one, remember seeing signs that read, let alone hearing strangers say, "Merry Christmas" when I was a kid. First, it went to "X-Mas", then... what do kids see and hear now? "Happy Holidays." Why? We-he-hell, if a big man cannot express himself, neither can a little man. I still recall the first time I was admonished not to say "Merry Christmas" anymore - I said, "Merry Christmas and fnck you."

Damn shame Pentagon has to in any way, shape or form walk a fine line to support the oh, so bourgeois Boy Scouts. That's the country we live in, thanks to the dear old ACLU - American Communist Lovers Union.

What next? No Chaplains in the Military?

    THINK

I do admire the resolve of these lil' fellers. It's not every day Boy Scouts set up shop in front of ACLU headquarters.
Sure would. It'd be a hell of a lot better.

yo! why don't you all just sit down and let the Asian takeover the world?!

    Oh wait...we already do:

    - Most people in the world...China plus India = 50% of world population
    - Most stuff made in the world...Made in China, Korea, Japan, Malysia, Singapore, Thailand...
    - Most common takeout...Chinese Food.
    - Most Ferrari Owners in the EC Crew...Asians (WoodEar, Jon Chen, Hubert, John H, Henry, Vik, "Bob" Utkash, Rehan, Pchop, etc...)
    - and...Pizza Hut probably hired some Asian programmer to write that software.
