Origin of "owned"

I think it is a hold over from Online Computer gaming. When one gets shown up, tries to win, but still gets beaten pitifully, it is referred to as owned.

 

No, it originated on a message board that I've been a member of almost since the beginning. I would tell you what it is, but then I'd be breaking rule #1

 

I really doubt that it started there.

Maybe some of the photoshopping but definitely not the term.

How about the "I'd hit it" pics? Are they the masterpiece of our hero, maranelloman? Can't remember seeing 'em on other boards ...

"Owned" came over from computer gaming, I think from games like Quake and others. Where if you got killed, or lost horribly, then you got owned.

Owned, Own3d, denied, w00t, n00b, newbie ALL came from the online quake community. We've been using em since before 98. The numbers were used in BBS boards back in the day to dodge bot filters that went looking for key words like porn and whatnot. So porn became pr0n and so on and it[being the numbers in place of letters] just spread from the hackers/warezers to the gaming community to the AOLers.

 

The term "Owned" started on IRC, early 90's as far as I can remember.

IRC is a network of internet chat servers. Whoever is the first person to enter a "channel" (room), "Owns" it. They then can designate ownership (actually called operator status) to their friends.

Kids like to fight over ownership of the rooms through DoS attacks on the current owners.

Eventually after a channel takeover, the "victors" will taunt the people who just got their chatroom stolen.

"Damn, we just owned your channel"

"You guys got owned"

"Damn, we own"

Then the term began getting used by IRCers would played Quake. If you get totally trounced, you got "owned"
