THE ORIGIN OF THE FERRARI PRANCING HORSE

Enzo Ferrari, in his memoirs ‘Le Mie Gioie Terribili’, states the story of the Prancing Horse is simple and fascinating. The ‘Cavallino Rampante’ was the badge used on the fighter plane of Francesco Baracca, the Italian ace of aces and First World War hero who was killed in aerial combat at Montello. According to the record of Enzo Ferrari, he was competing at the first Circuit of Savio near Ravenna in 1923, when he made the acquaintance of Count Enrico Baracca. This encounter resulted in an acquaintance with the mother, Countess Paolina, who suggested that painting the prancing horse of her son on the Ferrari cars would bring good luck. A photo of Baracca dedicated by the parents and the emblem were given to Enzo Ferrari for safe keeping. The ‘Cavallino’ was and still remains black but Ferrari substituted the canary yellow background for the original white, as this is the colour of Modena.

There is a humorous aside to this ...

When Enzo attempted to trademark his black prancing horse against a yellow background, he discovered to his annoyance that the German city of Stuttgart had gotten there first:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttgart#History

On the other hand, the German animal was a mare. Stutengarten in English means "mare garden". Ezo's cavallino is clearly a stallion, and I suspect that its artistic rendition has always made this as clear as politely possible in order to remind Porsches (which have the Stuttgart crest at the center of theirs) just where they belong relative to Ferraris. :D

Today, I had someone pull up next to me and ask what type of car I was driving. I yelled out "Ferrari". She said, "I thought so, but I saw the horse and thought 'when did Ferrari start making Mustangs?'".

This question comes up regularly. The official history of the Cavallino is described at great length in Ferrari's 2003 yearbook. Other accounts I've seen differ from the official account.

FYI, that plane (or one of his others) is being borrowed from the museum where it resides and will be on loan display at the 2006 FCA Annual Meet outside of Washington DC... at least that's what I was told by one of the organizers during the 2005 gathering.

hmmm... I thought that Fransesco Baracca had taken the " prancing horse" from an german flying ace that had that horse on his plane. Baracca won the german in a battle and took the horse as his symbol. The story goes that this german pilot was from stuttgart, and it actually was the emblem of stuttgart he had on his plane. Baracca just added the yellow bckground (aka giallo modena)

Then Enzo met Baraccas father and......

So thats why "the same" horse is on both Porsches and Ferraris emblems, but what about mustang, was there an american pilot laso ? ;) ?

Please correct me if I'm wrong since I cant recall from where I have learned this.

There is probably more of a connection with the Ferrari family and Baracca then is frequently published. Enzo's older brother, Dino, was associated with Baracca's outfit when he was an ambulance driver during the war.

SF: S= scuderia, means stable as in for horses and; F=Ferrari, as in the last name of an ex-Alfa race driver and race team leader named Enzo Ferrari.

Yea I always thought it had something to do with his brother who died in WW1.

Good story, another thing to add to my other countless knowledge. Maybe one day it will come in handy.
