Original Clutch

My 1988 Mondial 3.2 clutch was original and was proactively replaced at about 50,000km. It had lots of wear left, so I suspect a car that is driven without excessive aggression could have a clutch last 64,000km or more.

 

I put 115,000 miles on mine. The disc is hanging on a nail in my garage. It still had a ton of life left in it.


Actually I have only driven sticks since I turned 16 and I have never had one fail in 32 years.

Use them correctly and they can go for an unbelievably long time - and that includes tracking them.

 

I know of a car that did 89 000 miles on its original too

 

I'm almost sure it is; Dr Tommy's one has had a long life, but that's not uncommon either.
But if you ask any mechanic in Europe at the drop of the hat, they will tell you that 60 to 70.000 kms is more or less the usual life.

I remember seeing people use them like a brake on a hill, etc. things like that when more people drove them back when I was a kid. I just used mine to shift gears. The rest of the time I don't even have my foot near it.

I only replaced it at that particular service because I was beginning to believe that it had to be getting tired (even though it wasn't acting like it)- I mean how long can one actually last? I figured after 30 years, no harm in renewing it either way as long as it was already in the shop. What the hell.

I'll post a picture of it later. It was wearing but I obviously could have gone further.

 

My car has 62k miles on it and I have no receipts or proof of a clutch job and I have EVERY receipt from each of the previous owners. My car still runs great and I drive it a lot. Tommy is right, if you know how to drive a stick and do it properly, you will get a LOT of life out of a clutch.

I've got 114k on my '78 now (bought it with 65k). Have yet to do a clutch on it, nor any other car that I've had.

I replaced mine just because a couple years back @ like 92K. Lots of meat on it when pulled. It's still sitting in the basement. A clock sounds like a neat idea
