I was reading a book published by Mullin Museum on prewar French classics and somewhere in there it described a one off special and said the builder was most insistent on the color and shade of the car, and also might have also been strongly recommended what color and material the interior was upholstered with.

I never thought of that before I read that remark, but now I think in the case of Speciales, made by the coachbuilder for shows like Turin and Paris, for a later owner to cavalierly repaint the car to their whim and re-upholster it in another pattern and/or color, they are taking away fulfilling the original designer's vision for the car. It was meant to be presented "just so" in the original color and upholstery, and the later owner, sometimes generations later, having a different opinion is slighting the original designer by going his own whimsical way. I won't go so far as to apply this "rule" to regular production cars but it makes sense on one offs that they were meant to appear a certain way, so they should all be returned eventually to their original show appearance color (now what do you do if they changed the color for the next show...ah, problems...)
