There is a set of "correct" hose clamps on e bay. I think my mechanics have gradually replaced these clamps as they say they don't work very well. Do you guys think judges take off points for this? I drive the car and dont want leaky hoses.
They are good and correct hose clamps, and if you wish to be judged, I think a good idea... Regards, Alberto
I think that's it..... I have some rusted in place still holding after 30 years! But it's all in that "final point" for judged cars. Otherwise Summit racing is fine! Depends on how you use the car.....
My guess is that correct original style clamps would be tie breaker items at some concours events. At a national perhaps, I dunno, never having judged at that level, but at regional FCA events we've never had a "clamp conversation." among the Dino judges. DM
The remaining original clamps on my car have corroded, so I have removed these for replating some indefinite time. In the meantime, I replaced all clamps with ABA clamps, shown below in the large and smaller sizes. They are all stainless, including the screws, and have a rolled edge that doesn't cut into the hose. The large clamps do not have slots or ridges all the way around, so one can position them so only the flat band shows for a neat, mechanical look. They have a dull, not bright or garish, shine to them. One can get a neat screwdriver for the clamps too, with a flexible shaft and a socket at the end. All the ABA clamps, regardless of size, use the same socket, which is convenient. They are made in Sweden, I think. I have no relation with the company, but just like the product. However, I would use as-new Dino original clamps, given the opportunity. By the way, my fastener and plumbing guru Carroll Smith (he worked with Carroll Shelby) recomends a torque setting for clamps. I bought a small, screwdriver/click-type torque wrench for the purpose, but then I am probably obsessive-complulsive. Buy one of Smiths books, such as "Prepare To Win"; they are easy to read and hugely entertaining. Having a Lotus also (which are reputed to shed parts while on the driveway), I have read all I could about nuts, bolts, screws, locking wire, etc. Andres Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wurth also makes quality SS hose clamps and a clamp nut driver tool also. Sure makes installing clamaps in tight places easy. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
