This is the picture Wolfgang 5150 took at Universal Hollywood back in the 90s! Thank you, pal! Now, this looks a lot like the same car from the first posts, but take a look at those seats, they're tan! The overall shape is the same, just a different color... maybe those were just painted back in the days and faded/peeled over the years? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Exactly!! It's weird that they, at Universal, displayed this particular car with the front license plate! I mean... they should know better! After all... they produced the whole series!!
Check out this website! http://www.historicalhobbies.com/grip/Magnum.htm Apparently it's from one of the camera-men that actually worked on Magnum P.I.! He states that "We had 3 Ferraris a Close up picture car, one to drive fast in long shots, and a VW with a fiberglass "Ferrari" body to do "stunt" work!" So, maybe this car was VW-powered? By the way, can someone dig into this? http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1d14a2/ Nelson's Garage Car & Motorcycle Museum claims to have one of the original 308s used in the series!
i had wrote larry manetti's website promoting his book, and his exact words were,"thanks for reading my book, and i sold the ferrari ,many years ago, best regards larry,
I was actually searching for wallpaper images for my laptop's desktop, when I came accross this! Seems like the same car, only with the seats painted tan and some weird "retention" system... primitive SRS? LOL!!! Image Unavailable, Please Login
I found this on Youtube, this is where the chopper used in the series bites the dust. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR_nQWH5TBM]Helicopter of the tv-series Magnum P.I. Crashed - YouTube[/ame]
So sad to see it end up like that!! It was truly like another cast member of the show... Back to the stunt car; last night, I was actually able to determine its use in one of my all time favorite Magnum P.I. episodes: "Summer School". It was definitely the stunt car being used in the chase with the Pontiac... only thing is that it was painted green! Come to think about it, that stunt car might have been repainted a whole bunch of times along the 8 years the series was on! The giveaways are: the tall weird shaped seats, the narrower rear end and the deep chin spoiler (which the green star car did not have). Also, it looks like the stunt car runs on smaller rims... maybe TRXs? The green 308 on that episode seems to ride on 16" wheels. One more thing, if you look at the "cul-de-sac spin" in slow motion, you can teil that the rear panel of the car is a bit distorted... the middle line on the side "turns" down at the back of the car. Anyways, it was fun spotting this and witnessing "movie magic", hehe.
After the show aired, there were a few 500s flying around the Islands with the Island Hoppers paint job, not sure which if any were actual birds from the show.
You may want to watch that episode again - there were TWO 308 QVs in that episode, one of them was Green, driven by Robin Masters' 'nephew'....
I saw that years ago on a "caught on tape" TV show. No mention of Magnum was ever made. I seriously doubt that chopper had any affiliation with the show. It was a private company that had an accident.
There 2 308 QVs; Robin-1 and the green that Robin's nephew was driving. And then, there was the "stunt-car", that was painted green for that episode (at least, I assume it's the same "stunt-car" that was displayed at Universal Studios painted red... it really looks A LOT like it; same flaws and details!) ;-)
I can confirm that the 1985 "close-up" 308 was involved in a car accident about 12 years ago in Florida. It was owned by a friend of mine (had all the Universal paperwork included) who lived in SC. He and his wife were on vacation and a large SUV hit the front end after running a light. They were both fine but the car was not. The car was totaled by his insurance and he ended up with a Testerossa after it was all done.
Clear Choice Motors Colton, California is offering ZFFAA02A5C0040927 on eBay (item # 310647190344) and they are not sure, but they suspect that it might be possible by the documents they have on hand that #40927 was one of the cars used for the series Magnum PI. Not much to discuss, "...someone said that some original owner MAY have been the production studio and we are still waiting for proof...." I'll hold my breath.
Just took a read through this thread. Some cool history on the cars here, verified and otherwise. Some cool detective work, and some neat conjecture. Fun stuff. One thing I notice... With all of the pictures if the actual, genuine, real deal trust us on this cars displayed, no one pointed out that not a one of them seems to have a rear view mirror anywhere in sight. Usually that is a dead giveaway of a 'prop' car towed on a rig for location scenes.
Matthias, one of the Magnum 85 308's was sold by FNA to a woman living in Reno NV at the time. If there is a record of that car registered to a woman in Nevada in the late 80's it could be the car.
Hi, My name is Nick and I want to thank you because this comment helped me learn that my 308 GTS was the original used in the show. Only in season 1. I own car 28251. The car has been fully restored over the years and the interior has been switched to black. The rims have also been changed. I did not have anything to do with these changes. The steering wheel, shifter, and pedals are all original. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nick, According to Matthias, your interior should be black. Congratulations on having "The Car." Mark
How did you find that out? I have the 1947-2007 book and 28251 isn't even in it - is there a later edition out now or did he post that info here on Fchat? I need to update my records
