I have a US version 1986 Testarossa that was red when I bought it. I have had the car for 15 plus years. When I bought it, I spoke to the original owner and he said the car was black. Checking the paint code and VIN. Now that the values are rising, I am thinking the best value here would be to return to the original color. My suspicion is that factory black cars were less common. Looking for thoughts, comments or facts. Thanks in advance.

It's hard to unring a bell.
I'm not sure going back to the original color with a re-spray will bring the value up again, as isnt the original paint, really, and may be considered a less desirable color, even if it is less common.
I'd only do it if the current paint were in need of TLC.

The color of the paint means very little unless you are going to show the car. Of course any change of color is assumed to be "of the period".
Gaining places in a concours will not immediately increase the value of the car as it is more the history and that history take years to take effect.
So the color of the paint may/or may not prevent you from gaining points in some shows. So I guess you could say that will eventually effect the
    value in the future.
It is easier to look at the reverse. Paint it a non period color and the value will be less. Maybe.

If you are going to paint the car, definitely paint it black. First, because it's original color. Second, because it looks *so much* better.

Opinions will vary, but an European sold "monospecchio" a friend owned for a while, had also been repainted red, it was like that for 10-15 years. Owner was looking to sell it (had also another TR) and had it repainted in original white. It sold for a good price and AFAIK it went to a collector in Monaco. In general I do not like red cars, the TR looks nice in red but I prefer that model in Blue, Black or White or almost any colour that is not bright. (I saw one in silver in Padova and I think it looked fantastic.) Cheers!
