I once knew a site that listed the original sale prices of all of the Ferrari models when new. The one in question is my '78 308 GTS. I found on one site the price new at 43k but can't confirm the number. My searches have been rather futile. Any gurus? Thanks,
I have a copy of invoice says $60,695.00 plus Destination charge of $520.00 =$61,215.00 for 1984 308 GTS
Thanks John. A 1984 would make it a QV and a 6 year spread. Quite a price jump from a carbed 2 valve. Sounds about right though from what I have seen.
The orginial Window sticker on my 1980 308 GTSi is $53,350.00. purchased from Ferrari of the South in Jackson, MS by a Carol Harris out of Baton Rouge, LA Kelly
I recall that in a letter to Ferrari of Monterrey (complaining about some service issues) that the original owner of my ex-308GTS ('78) mentioned the purchase price as $43K which matches that FCA-NWR data fairly well. Interesting to note the significant premium that GTS had over GTB in those days...
That site shows an 89 328 GTS from $73K to $84K, but I have my sticker that shows $63K with destination charges. I wonder how they got some of those numbers. $20K difference?
Man I really feel stupid! Now I know where I saw the price of my 308 before! www.ferrariclub.com. MY OWN CHAPTER WEBSITE! SHEEEEZZZZZZ. I find interesting that the price of the GTB went up 10k from '78 to '79 and there is no listing at all for a '78 GTS. Did thay show up late in '78? Mine has a November '78 date on it. Thanks for all the help everybody!
Hi Peter, How goes it? Are you done with your car yet? The site shows a '76 GT4 selling for 22,600 to 24,900.
I phoned the body shop about an hour ago. The car is already in the booth being painted. I should be back behind the wheel by the end of the week.
my dealer invoice for my 78 308 is as follows: 308 gts P.O.E. $35,000 freight & prep: $ 350.00 am/fm stereo: $150.00 (blaupunkt) total: $35,500 discount: $4000 sale price: $31,500 Imagine that! a $4000 discount from the dealer on a Ferrari...unheard of now.
Peter, congrats! Did you have the entire car repainted? I am amazed at how fast yours is getting done. Mine is going on almost 4 months, but had alot of rust cut out. FYI: mine sold for $24,400 in 1977. (sat 2 years on showroom floor).
Cool! Must be pretty exciting!..........................so I guess the moose antlers are coming off this time?
Yeah yeah, I know, lots of questions..................... Last one, So how does 41k in 1978 dollars translate into today's dollars?
purchased new 4/18/78 arlington, Va through Heishmans porsche-audi (before the dealer network was really set up) car is black/black Feb 78 manufacture. just as an fyi: prices went up around 10k in 1979 and then another 10k in 1980 with the injected cars. 79's were around 45k and the "i" cars I think were around 56k. I'm not sure if this was due to demand for the cars or a decrease in the value of the US dollar.
Thanks P, That explains the price surge of the GTB's as well. I think demand and a devalued dollar combined to raise the price. Can anybody tell me how to determine the value of today's dollar to a 1978 dollar? Thank You!
I would venture to say that you can assume 4-4.5% average inflation per year. At 4.5% its about $85,000
I have a guide to Ferrari Road Cars issued by Ferrari UK which covers all cars from 1960 to 2000. It says the 308 GTS was launched in 1978 at a price in the UK of GBP15,499. Total production was 3,219 of which 184 were RHD.
