I know many have tales of woe about the original Marelli MT42E starter motor being weak but I just went through one on my Stratos and put on a NOS solenoid and I can't imagine it working any better. Powerful, quick turnover and instant start up with my new Winterburn ignition in a Dinoplex case. I wonder if the solenoid is the main weak link in Marelli starter problems. All the amps flow through those big contacts and over time they get pits and corrosion and can't flow enough to operate properly. Good ground and brushes are a must as well.

There is nothing wrong with the good old-style starter motors from either Marelli or Bosch. I have never really understood the hype about changing out the old originals starters with newer high torque starters.

I agree. After reading many articles recommending gear reduction starters, and being tempted based on the good comments, I decided to stay original. I refurbished the starter, including solenoid replacement. It’s still working fine years on. With Adrian’s Bosh ignition, the starting I very reliable, firing on a few turns. I rather like the sound and slow purposeful start up, part of the original Dino character. Glad I stuck with the original.....

I rebuilt mine through a local guy who knows how to fix the common issues with these and not any had issues with the stock setup. I did add a flyback diode to the ignition switch as recommended by Mr Corbani as he said it solved the degradation due to arcing problems. We’ll see in 4-5 years if he was right!

In addition, I think the gear reduction starters sound odd.

I have one in a larger car, would not go back for the world! No Hype at all. Before, hard starting engine, very, but now....Flash!
Rebuilt the starter, for $25, and now sits with the rest of bits. My children will have to worry about it.
If you want a modern starter, call Gustafson, just google it. Others sell his motors for double. Heck of a nice guy. They weigh 1/3 of originals.

More so, on smaller motors no big deal, stick with original. They really are rock solid. Never had one go bad, but bought a bunch that were.

Alberto, Modern starters might be applicable were the original starter motor is on the borderline too weak or maybe worn down and replacement is too expensive, and the car is not a beloved classic. My impression is that many people change to high torque / high speed starters to try to solve a problem that is located somewhere else, i.e. a weak ignition, excessive mechanical wear or fuel supply issues. Sorry for my purist attitude, I am getting old.

Nothing wrong being old and a purist, I am as well but I am a realist. I resisted for several years but saw the light :)

IMO The original MM MT42E was OK from new in its day but was basically shoe horned into the space available, it is only rated at 0.745Kw & should really have a much larger capacity for the engine size.

The modern GR starters draw less current and have a rating of 1.0kw (246) resulting in a much faster cranking speed v amps which helps starting.

I have two Mt42E starters on the shelf and they can stay there, when I sell the car someone else can have the pleasure of fitting them if they wish to do so!

Cost is also a factor, new old style starters are around £850 GBP, GR starters around £240 GBP. Rebuild costs can vary but you will not get much change from £400 in parts and then cost to do the work and you are still basically left with a old starter.

GR are easier to fit, but sound slightly different I admit.

PS -the Gustafson starters are excellent

Is there a certain model of starter made by Gustafson for our Dinos ? I looked at their site and didn't see one.

I just had my original starter motor rebuilt including the solenoid by a local specialist for less than £100. Works great now and makes all the right sounds.

Mine had to be rebuilt by a "specialist' as wherever I went, it was a 'fixed' price of more that $300, for whatever reason ;)
So I brought it home, overhauled, repainted, for $40. On the next flight took it back, now on a shelf. Very sought after.

I really have no objections on the right sounds, as the Gustafson unit, it sounds very good, pleasing enough, unlike the
original, that wheezed and almost sounded anemic when it was running. Hot starting was a nightmare, now...piece of cake.
And I don't even get a commission from Gustafson!

    Regards, Alberto
