I love Ferraris, and my 246 GTS in particular, but I don't subscribe to the "originality" mania. If I want to put a CD player in my car, I'm going to do it. I'm considering stylistically appropriate 16x7" wheels (if I can find any) and 215/55-16 tires. I just put a set of Sumitomo H-rated 205/70-14 tires on it because I simply refuse to pay $400.00 a piece for XWXs. (By the way, the Sumitomos were 44 bucks each from Tire Rack.)

Obviously, I'm not going to do anything crazy or extreme that can't be undone at some future time. For now, I want to enjoy my car, and if that means a few concessions to modernity and/or fiscal sanity, then I say "why the hell not?"

Hey, its your car, do what you want with it!! You paid for it.

That said, owners of older Ferraris are kind of "stewards or conservators" for their cars, and to be easy to sell in the future, I'd make changes that can be removed easily to bring the car back to "original" configuration.

My car does not have the original "mouse hair" dash covering, and the wire wheels are not Borranis. But I like the leather dash better, and the wheels are more attractive than Borranis. I removed the center mufflers in favor of straight pipes, but saved the mufflers for future re-installation.

There is, however, a non-original cavallino badge on the rear deck lid that I intend to eventually remove.

Also, drive the damn car, don't make a hangar queen out of it.

    Tom Elerding

    Just my 2 cents!

Do what you want. SAVE EVERYTHING YOU TAKE OFF IN A BIG BOX. the next owner might want them, and it'll get you some extra bucks when you sell.

As to tires, Sumitomos are fine for concours, if that's something you want to do. Rules state that you have to have original size tires, not XWX Michelins.

I had the Sumitomos on my car for about six months and they're a very good tire. The XWX is a better tire, and looks great on the car, so I went that way.

I have lots of non-original stuff where it doesn't show, I just try to be careful where it does show.

And, if you tear off an original something, and decide you don't want to save it, STICK IT ON EBAY, one of us Dino nuts will buy it.

Thanks for the $0.02. I agree with everything you say, especially the part about driving the car! I make a point to drive it on the open road at least twice a week. As soon as I get the coolant hoses replaced for peace of mind (because I know that they're old), I'm taking it to the "Tail of The Dragon" (see Road and Track a couple of issues back) in NC to "stretch the legs" a bit. Well, I might wait for the weather to cool down a bit, since the car never had A/C (Euro version) and it's about a five-hour drive from here.

I do try to keep to a self-imposed 6500 rpm "red line".

Gorgeous Daytona, by the way. Being new here, I'm still trying to figure out how to include a pic of my car on the posts...

I think you have to subscribe, at some level, to attach pix.

Can't put a picture in your signature at all, no matter how much you pay!!!

Oh, and welcome!! How about some details about your car. Year, serial # color, etc.

I am putting my '74 Dino back together after pulling the engine & having some valve work done. I am keeping everything that I take off but I have installed a Gustafson gear reduction starter in place of the original one. The original one worked ok but the new one is about 60% of the size, spins easily & you can remove it (if u need to ) without taking off the rear headers. It also costs a fraction of what the old one goes for. Importantly, I just wanted to see if I could make it work & I think I can. I don't really care too much what anyone thinks or says about originality etc . I have also removed the AC and am making up a different bracket (thanks John Corbani) to attach the heat exchanger to. I think some of these modifications are sensible & thats why I am trying them.

Mine is a '73 GTS, s/n 07412, right hand drive. It's kind of a family heirloom. My dad bought it new in England in early '74 and has had it ever since. Since he doesn't drive anymore, it's mine now. The color is that lime green, I can't remember what they called it. I can only estimate the mileage. Back in the late 70's, my parents moved from England to Switzerland. The Swiss required replacing the mph speedometer with a kph one. The odometer reads 27,000 km. (about 16,700 miles) and it probably had 15 or 16 thousand prior to that, so I would guess that the total mileage is somewhere just north of 30K. The car is a full European version with no emissions equipment, brought into this country with the rest of my folks' personal effects when my dad retired. It has been registered in South Carolina ever since.

Right hand drive is no problem for me as far as shifting, but passing can be a bit dodgy without a passenger / spotter.

I think tires, and sound systems are two areas where taking use of newer technology is legitimate..........yea, you have to cut the dash, a blank off plate would cover all sin if they want to take it out.....

I'll bet Enzo would approve good rubber and jammin' the 'box!!!

I'm with Goodyear as a sponsor so the XWX is a moot point for me.......

Very cool lime green colour, quite the 70's look!
Almost the colour of Schwinn's Lime Crate bicycles back then, something which many young kids like us aspired to.

I'm changing the aging Yokohama's currently on my Euro Dino GTS and going with Cokers XWX's; Jerry cut us a spectacular deal last year and I hadn't mounted them yet. We've been on many FCA club drives this spring and got into some aggressive turns with the rears aurally protesting. This made me wonder how old the Yokohamas are. Knowing the car was in So. Cal for decades convinced me that they're probably dry.

I'd think safety over the price tag. These cars are so easy to drive that you can get into some deceptively fast speeds on straights and when you hit the turns then you'll want all the grip you can get.
Also, the Yokohamas have a bit of bump steer which is something I'm also looking to shed by changing to the XWX's.

BTW, I bought the car with the PO's installed high end Alpine CD player, amps and speakers which I didn't think I'd like. Come to find out it is great to have thhem onboard.

Everybody definately has the right to do what they want with their car. But for what its worth, I swing the opposite way entirely. I'll take a nice original car with a couple of mice living in the glove box over a restored car any day of the week. I really don't know why but these cars wearing their original clothing just excites me. And when oppertunity allows you to run into an exceptional original car as I have, the feeling is unreal.
