We crossed over Lake Michigan, and they you could see Lake Winnebago in the distance. Winnebago means "dirty water", but it looked fine to me. The last picture is Lake Winnebago.

Lake Winnebago is a 137,700-acre (55,700 ha)[1] freshwater lake in eastern Wisconsin, United States. It is the largest lake entirely within the state[2] and one of the largest inland lakes in the United States. Lake Winnebago is about 30 by 10 miles (48 by 16 km), with 88 miles (142 km) of shoreline, an average depth of 15.5 feet (4.7 m) and a maximum depth of 21 feet (6.4 m).[1]

The lake is a remnant of Glacial Lake Oshkosh approximately 12,000 years ago.[3] Ice blocked water from entering Lake Michigan at Green Bay, and the glacial lake ponded against ice since it had no outlet.

Tip-consider flying into KGRB and renting a house near the seaplane base on Lake Winnebago.

The reason we went up early was to see something really spectacular that you don't get to see anywhere else. The mass arrivals. It's really neat to walk around with no crowds, and see all this empty space that will soon be filled.

Ahhhh fist sight of the seaplane base. You can stop on the bridge to take some wonderful pictures. And of course as you will see later, you can access the base for a much closer inspection via pontoon.

And then we saw this unfortunate accident. A Mooney started bouncing, and then ground looped into one of the OshKosh trucks. I could only think how sad. They waited this entire year for this moment, for it to only go horribly wrong. The plane was totalled, but they appeared unharmed. Planes continued to land for a while until the runway was closed.

And then Austin Meyer (X-Plane.com) showed up with his new evolution. His is the most powerful one to date, with 850hp PT. The graph is interesting as they were testing it in various power settings. The top speed was 402 MPH.

We waited by the experimental tower with the lady in charge of placing the planes. Many of these people are unpaid volunteers who come from all around the country. She was not happy that the large enclosed air conditioned tents took up over 160 plane parking spots. Then she said one of them cost 80K for the week. I think I heard that right, but it seems high. But then again, these are some of the most expensive toys or modes of transportation you can buy. They also have an interesting preferred type of vehicle. VWs with the doors and tops removed.

His plane looks pretty much like his software -- unfinished.

He may agree with you as it is an ever evolving process with each version being better that the first..from what I understand. And not being able to judge how "unfinished" it is, I asked several vendors using this type of software and they said that X-plane was superior to everything else out there including Microsoft. But that's for others to judge.

As for the plane, it is being finished, and I thought it would be neat for those viewing to see how the carbon fiber looks as it will all be covered soon. Pretty amazing in my book. His original idea was to leave it like this in some areas to remind him of his Scuderia.

Thanks for the pics, David. The museum is great as ever, especially the rare Bugatti racer. And I remember the times when the landing pattern was fuller than ATL ever gets!
