4 have been reported killed in the first operational crash of a V-22/CV-22. http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/04/09/340468/four-killed-as-usaf-cv-22-crashes-in-afghanistan.html
The Taliban claim to have shot down far more aircraft than they really have. Which isn't to say they didn't shoot this one down, but, given the Osprey's often-troubled history and the nature of the operations in which it was involved, it is possible that, like in many fling-wing crashes, this is simply an accident. None of which makes it any less of a tragedy for the families of the pilots and soldiers on board.
Having seen the Ospreys in Iraq I would be concerned about brownout on landing and all that crap being ingested into the engines as a side concern. My understanding is that helicopters have particle separators/air filters that help keep the engines clean, not so much on the Osprey.
sand must be hell on the engines. but i knew a huey pilot who said they would throw walnut shells into the engines to clean them up?
The Taliban did NOT shoot this Osprey down. Unfortunately, we are our worst enemy sometimes..........
