He nearly rammed my car this afternoon on the Southern State Parkway (westbound, around Bellmore), as he zoomed up from behind trying to pass everyone, with sirens blaring and strobes firing. Not sure where he was headed in such a big hurry but he was making a lane for himself in the middle of heavy rush hour traffic.

Anyway, I have never seen the Troopers in a Firebird before. Usually, I'll spot the Camaro but that one is fully marked. This was a gray/silver Firebird. Very slick, I would never have known it was a trooper if he wasn't running the lights and sirens.

Anybody seen this car before? Any other unusual "unmarked" troopers to look out for? Just be careful if you see a gray Firebird in your rearview mirror...

Maybe it was not a cop. Maybe it was some ******* trying to get through traffic.

I don't know anyone like that who is currently in first place in the Bullrun

in 2000 I was pulled over by a green firebird on the SSP on my way home from a Honda Conference to announce the new civic. He knew Id never drive all the way back to fight it in court and I just took the 2 points.

Perhaps it was a Nassau County Highway Patrol officer in disguise and not a state tropper that I saw? They often cruise the Southern State in addition to the state troopers. Also, there is a very large depot/warehouse in Bellmore (on Newbridge Rd) where they have Nassau County Police vehicles. It's very close to the highway and, when I've passed by, I've seen numerous unmarked vehicles in and around that facility. Most of them are your typical Crown Vics/Grand Marquis. In the past, I have seen an unmarked SUV (Explorer) that pulled someone over. The firebird sighting was the first time I've seen it.

So I guess my next question is: How does the Nassau County police interact with the State Troopers with regards to Highway Patrol on the parkways? Are they totally independant?

They have jurisdiction within each other's primary patrol areas but extend the courtesy of notifying each other when they are out of their "neighborhood". So don't think a Nassau patrolman has to stop at the entrance ramp to the Meadowbrook if you just ran a light.

They have had Camaro police cars in the mid west for years. I suppose it is to help the police outrun the people that try to escape on those LONG straight roads. I never thought they would start using them around here with all of the traffic.

There are lots of cars out west that can't outrun a Camaro. Also, the ratio of trucks to cars is much greater out there, so if most criminals are driving around in a Chevy Silverado or Ford F150's, they are lunch meat for the cops in these cars. Also, Camaro's do have very impressive performance stats for cars of their price range. (Sorry for delay of this post, computer @ home has been down for about a week and a half now! :) )

Most cars couldn't outrun a 98-02 Camaro police car, including your NSX.

    305 bhp.
    345 foot pounds of torque.
    3400 pounds.
    Low 5's to 60.
    Low 13's in the 1/4.
162/172, (depending on gear ratio) top end.

I've been pulled over by that taxi in the 355. He put the light on and I drove over to the precinct on 30th street and stopped out front.

Turns out, was a real cop.
