$16k a year is criminal. I understnad rates in NJ are worse than NY though. When i was listed as the primary driver on a new fully loaded A4 a few years ago, i paid i think 1600 a year or maybe less through state farm. this was when i was 17!! Im not sure what i pay now, but i go to school more than 50 miles away from home, so i dont think state farm charges much.
My friend only pays about $3k a year (i think) on his 99 camaro SS. He's 21 with a few speeding tickets and an accident. At one point he was up to $5k a year from tickets, so he just took his car off the road for a few months because when he turned 21 the rates went down.

and for what its worth, one of my friends dads checked how much it would be to insure a16yr old on viper just for ****s and giggles and i think the number they gave him was $9k. I think some companies wont even insure this type of driver/car combination.

Might be worth getting a beater and putting the M on as a second car or putting it under your parents policy and having you as the primary driver.

    Or...get married ASAP :)

JOHNS -How is your credit? Insurance companies look at that aspect of a potential customer when doing an assessment. Lots of credit card debt, bankruptcy are a red flag to insurance companies that you've had trouble paying up in the past. Insurance companies want to ensure that they will get paid for the policy, and not have to wait for the money or hassle you for the money.
Also, do you have a lot of credit cards (even those with little or no balance)? That is POTENTIAL debt, and a strike against you.
How bad were other insurance companies? Have you tried Progressive?
Post up what you end up doing. Best of luck in your quest!!!

Also, John - How many tickets have you gotten in the past 3-4 years (regardless of points or $$$ paid in fines)? Even when you plead no contest and they court says it won't be on your reccord, it DOES go on your record. Bunch of lying bastards!!!
I got a ticket a year ago in January. Driving back to Milford from Vermont in my Jeep. Doing 70-75 on I-95 in CT keeping pace with the traffic in the center lane. Cars were passing me on the left going significantly faster. Cop was a d!ckhead and wrote me the ticket. I plead not guilty on the ticket, and met with a court clerk. He punched up my record (at the time it was spotless!), and said that because I had no priors the fine was reduced to $80, no points and NO RECORD of the ticket on my license. Great, I paid the fine and went on with life. Then I had to go shopping for car insurance (GEICO wouldn't insure my TR even though they had no problem insuring my 308 for 3 years!) So, I went shopping, and Progressive gave me the best name for the money. They checked into my driving history and found that speeding ticket on my record!!
Next time, I'll get the court clerk to put the terms of the final deal in writing, so I can sue his/her ass off for lying!!! Or maybe just punch them in the face once or twice...

Don't get discouraged. I'm not sure why they are charging you such ludicrous premiums, but there are probably 10 - 14 good insurance companies that you can shop around. And you should. The disparity in quotes you get will surprise you. For my NSX, I had one AAA insurer quote me $8,xxx -- I finally got it insured for $1,5xx. Huge number of insurers, large differences in price.

I would stay away from the small shops, unless they are AAA rated. Small shops = potentially low premiums, but = lots of troubles if/when you have to claim. :(

Good luck with the search. Let us know how it turns out.

I have Allstate and insure my 308QV, Alfa Romeo Spider, and my wife's 2003 VW Passat. I pay $2,800 a year for all 3 and I have the highest limits possible - $500K/$250K/$100K. No points or accidents (knock on wood) and I am 32. I also live in NJ.

That's insane. For that price, you're better off paying the car in full & just get a liability coverage.

BTW, I love my '04 LSB M3, SMG rocks!

I had Prudential and was only paying $1400/yr for a Contour & 308
But they wouldn't insure the Ferrari for replacment value and couldn't tell me what value it had. The 308 is considered a "Classic" and will hit antique at age 25.

So now I'm with NJM and pay $1600/yr
    I'm the only driver at age.......(over 35 )
    1K deductable on both cars
10 miles to/from work for the contour
    Ferrari:pleasure use only
Ferrari was officially appraised and insured for replacement

    No tickets....ever (knock on wood)
State-approved defensive driving course (AAA- every 3 years)

    Hope this helps.

Liability coverage only means your insurance will pay damages on the other party's vehicle ONLY (if you are at fault). You pay for all repair expenses on your vehicle.

This is not a good practice but certainly an option for you since your car is paid off.
