I know this isn't the slightest bit related to F-cars per se, but since I do have a Stradale, and all of my "car buddies" hang out here, I wanted to ask you all what you think of the upcoming 500 horse BMW M6 w/SMG? It's definitely got my interest as a replacement for my '06 S4 Avant 6-speed as my daily driver. Also, what other cars would you compare it to?

There's a couple of threads in the UK saying don't bother - huge price & huge depreciation

I've had the pleasure to drive the M6 and it is a terrific car. Its probably not as raw or extreme as many here would prefer for a sports car, but if you are looking for a very good handling sporty GT type car I think it would fit the bill fine. It will depreciate yes, just like most other cars. The SMG III system is terrific- fast and smooth and works very well as an automatic even. The power is ferocious- there is good power everywhere in the rev range and especially as you climb above ~4500 RPM. The car feels smaller than it looks and feels relatively nimble. I was very impressed with it.

    Best regards,
    Jerry

What would the price be? 90K+? At that price I would rather have a 550 for about 20K more. I agree 550 is a 2 seater but I am sure the M6 is not that roomy in the rear anyway.

If it a four seat car is needed like your s4 maybe the prev gen M5 would do or the new one? Or an RS6 if you want to stay in VAG fold

Is the M6 available with a full manual transmission?

I have one on order....#17 on the list I believe.

I'm hoping that they decide to bring a 6 speed manual to the states after the first year. I likely won't see my car until late 2006 as a 2007 model year so there's a chance I'll be able to order mine with a 6 speed after all, not the 7 speed SMG.

It will replace my E46 M3 as my daily driver.

What about the new Audi RS4, or wait for the RS6 with Gallardo's V10.

    I had an 88 M6, a 93 M5 and most recently a 98 355 Spider and 2004 360 Modena.

The BMW crowd is mixed on both the 2005 M5 and M6. No disputing the innovative engine and amazing torque but styling has been a turn off for many, including me.

I find the 500 HP M5 styling simply uninspiring, coming across more as a heavy, 4 door coup, mass produced. I'm not even interested in driving one. I find the 500 HP M6 styling better but am disappointed that it looks large, heavy and bulbous. In other words, it looks like a puffed up 2000-2003 M3 (which was a killer in terms of performance and value for money). As reported by another commentator, I'm glad if the 2005 M6 feels smaller than it looks..

In a nutshell, ny take is that Ferrari has moved ahead with each iteration, not only in terms of performance but styling. BMW is ramping up performance but, IMHO, has slipped hugely in terms of styling. Yawn.

Thanks for offering your opinions, esp the driving impressions from FJerry, which were very encouraging. Guys, I'm not looking for a razor sharp handling car, (got a CS remember!), but simply a *good* handling, *comfortable* 2 door GT car with about 500hp ;c) Also, I like the idea of 7-speed SMG III *or* put it in full Auto if feeling totally lazy. (I seriously doubt this will happen very often).
The styling, while possibly not a drop dead gorgeous car, I feel it *is* a tremendous improvement over their latest, imho, butt fugly 3 & 5 series 4-door offerings. (no offense to owners of such). I personally wouldn't touch one of those one with a 10 ft insulated pole!
I went ahead and got my place in line late yesteday, so we'll see what develops over the next several months.

The coupe and spyder can be had slightly used and are damned comfy,quick,etc.. Just may be what your looking for,and if you get one a couple of years old, who would know if you didn't tell them? Also, it has a Ferrari's soul, and where else can you get that?

    GoodWood,
I think in that case you will really appreciate the M6. It really is very much a BMW in the best sense- great handling for a road car, comfortable, probably reliable relative to its performance class. I like the styling. If it bothers you and you want to spend the money you can change that too. Let me know if pursing that kind of change is of interest to you.

    Best regards,
    Jerry

Actually, Jerry, the styling is fine with me. What I'd *really* like is a performance exhaust ;) Having seen a couple of vids, I think the exhaust needs to be opened up a bit. It's too quiet, esp after having spent most of my time in the "upper" rev range with my CS! btw, what did you have it mind to mod it's styling?

On exhaust generally Eisenmann makes good performance exhaust. I have this on my Z8 and I am thrilled with it.

Decide in real life first though- the M6 sounded good to me from the drivers seat and also when I was following in the M5 (we were permitted a test while visiting with BMW M).

In terms of styling changing, I would suggest this:
    www.fiskercb.com

disclaimer: I do have an involvement with them. I like the standard 6 styling too. But I do like this even better. Don't judge too harshly until you see these in the metal, they are quite impressive.

    Best regards,
    Jerry
