    Hey guys,

    Seeing that some here live in full-service buildings, I was wondering what is the customary end of year/holiday tip to doormen? Supers and porters??

    Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Depends on how many people on the building staff and how often you abuse their services...

    Thanks for the reply guys. It's a medium-size building, 141 units. This is our first Xmas here since moving in March. We don't really use out of the ordinary services, mainly packages and the door service. A friend told me they read somewhere that he avg. was $20/pp, but I think that's a little too low. Thoughts?

    OK - I am going to blunt - Doormen, porters and the super in a NYC building (Lived here all my life) have the keys to your kingdom - they can make life very easy - or tough - very little in between. And if you have kids and a spouse - having the building on your side is not just essential, but critical. Make a statement - get folks on your team - in the end, a few hundred dollars total is not going to break you, but it will set you apart from the pack and get you preferential treatment. Remember - the payoff comes when you NEED them - sure, you may not use the services much now, but you will at some point (emergency or otherwise) and what you give now will pay HUGE dividends.

    Guidelines are tough (and I give a little more than the following), but I would suggest the super @$200; head doormen (for day and afternoon shift) at least $100; other doormen at least $75 (maybe the late night doorman gets $50); porters at least $25 each.

    I am glad this came up, my gut was $50pp because I live in the same sized 100-150 unit building.

    I dont even know how many people work there nor anyones names, I just want to do the right thing. I don't use the concierge for anything but getting packages out of the closet. Just saved me some $ I guess.

    You've got to be very generous if you have been seen by the building staff driving your expensive whips. $100 each for starters gang; otherwise you will look cheap. Playas' and ballers have to look good, you know !!

    Dumb people throw money around just to prove or pretend they have it. I say you pay for the service you get. If your not treated any differently then anyone else you tip the same, just because you know you drive an exotic car doesn't mean anyone else cares. Nor does it mean you are richer or more of a baller then your neighbor with a 3 series BMW. You pay for the service you get, if the staff treats you like special like a baller for whatever reason they see fit, you should throw them some extra cash.

    BTW: Nothing personal Smooth, not calling you dumb, just stating my general opinion and stirring discussion.
