First National Bank of the Southwest is in the Plano area and a few other locations in DFW. There are the TX arm of First National Bank of Omaha. It is a good sized privately held bank.

There is a more national Sovereign unrelated to this Texas bank, but I found the right one. Branch located only about a mile away. I emailed the President of the Southlake branch personally and he got me in contact with one of the VP's. I met with her today for about an hour.

I expected a small bank like this to have less products and icing compared to Bank of America, but with the benefit of more personal attention. Well, the short of it is the amount of personal attention and how nice they are far exceeded my expectations while my expectation of fewer features was far exceeded in a negative way. The basics are all there, but I wonder if I've become dependent on a few things Bank of America offers.

A few of the short comings...

    • Online banking not as extensive.
    • Only about 250 ATM's in Texas, but they are at 7-11's and I'm always at the two 7-11's in Southlake.
    • No ATM deposits, but they do have a drop box at the branch. BoA has a cool new check reader at ATM's.
    • Local checks deposit 2 days while all others deposit 4 days. Bank of America is immediate personal and 24 hours business.
    • No debit/check cards for business accounts. I live and die by my business debit/check card with BoA.
    • personal debit/check cards have a $1,000 limit. BoA doesn't have that limit, if money is in your account then you can use it all.
    • No checks or credit card for Line of Credit accounts, you have to request a draw.
    • Business Credit Card rate is 16%. I get Business 0% 12 month going up to 9% offers weekly from places like Capital One and BoA.
    • Overdraft transfers have to be a fixed amount and $3 charge for each one. If you set the amount at $100 and you go over $500 then it will charge you $15. BoA transfers exactly what you need in the account no fee.
    • Savings accounts you are only allowed 3 transactions a quarter, BoA was unlimited.

I really want to have a personal relationship with the banker to build long term. Sovereign can provide that, but I'm not sure at what inconvenience. The fees appear to be much less than BoA and although I can call someone directly at Sovereign during bank hours, there isn't a 24/7 service like BoA.

I really want to make this work with Sovereign. I think we can live with the personal checking account with limited ATM's and $1,000 limit on debit/check card. Not sure I can live without a debit/check card for the business. I don't have a business credit card now, but that may be the best thing. Just pay it off monthly so I don't get hit with the ridiculous 16%. I just prefer the mental aspect of when you purchase something then the money is out of your account right then.

Business credit card might be a good way to go. My brother uses one for his practice, and has a card that gives him rewards miles on airlines. He gets about a plane ticket a month, sometimes 2. Fees for the card are nominal. You clould likely find a card with will give a small percentage cash back or some other kind of perk you'd like, and if you're using a debit card now, you'll actually get to keep the float for 30 days.
