OT: Jewelry Store Owners

I was wondering if there were any jewelry store owners that could explain to me how the retail business for jewelry works. My father currently specializes in the garment industry and would like to break in the retail side of jewelry this year. If you could help me understand the jewelry business in any way please PM me.
