Moved to west Austin last year, bought a cool house on an acre lot but do have neighbors and in an HOA. My neighbor is loud - and has a very annoying dog that is never let inside. He barks at the wind, digs up holes underneath the fence, barks when I'm outside, barks when my dog is outside, barks when....you get the idea. I went over and knocked on their door and politely asked them to quiet their dog. Not working. I went over 4 times and nothing is changing. Any ideas on what else I can do?

As much as I hate HOAs, talk to them - they should be able to help some. If not, invite all the Ferrari's in Austin and host a Rev Off. :D

First, check your covenants. Unless you're in a gated community, there is likely nothing that the HOA can do to help you (and even then, since this is defined as a civil matter, they probably can't do more than you have already). You need to start calling the police and check with local agencies to see what the noise laws in your area are.

    Good luck.

This ^^^^. Usually there is a specific time set when loud music or otherwise become a public nuisance.

Thanks guys I'll do some research to find out what the local noise ordinances are and post them here. I'm sure I'm not the only one with a lousy neighbor.

I called the animal control center and he was more than willingly to come out and knock on my neighbors door. I told him I will give him another chance before getting them involved.

Also I bought one of those high pitched bark deterrants on amazon. Please don't waste your money they did not do anything!

I have the same problem with my next door neighbor. Only my lot isn't one acre and their back yard shares a fence with my back yard. The dog is a Great Dane and barks at EVERYTHING.

The problem is that the neighbors are really nice people, and they pay my kid to dog sit when they leave town. They got the dog from a rescue and it had led a tough life. She's extremely skittish and won't let anyone pet her, and she barks. She barks when I walk around the kitchen. She starts at 7am, and ends about 9pm.

    No idea what to do.

I had a similar situation at my last place (shared fence, loud dog). I walked around the block and knocked on the door. The guy got on defence right away, but I tried to just be reasonable and plead with him. I was like, "Look man, I wanted to come over and see if you could do something rather than just call the police with a noise complaint..." and he cuts me off with, "If you call the cops, I'll sue ya!!!" At this point I laugh in his face. (After that he went on a rant about how his dog protects the neighborhood from 'Katrina people' (his exact words) and we should thank him.

I basically ended with, "Fine, at this point, if you can't shut the dog up, I'll just have the police deal with it." After that it got 'better'. Not completely silent, but I got the sense he tried to keep the dog in the house more.

That's a tough one. For me it's easier because the guy is a total ******. :) I love dogs and your neighbor sounds like a really nice family - my neighbor bought this dog as a puppy and invested no time with him at all. I never seen them take him out for a walk, play ball, etc....when they are in the backyard they lock him up in a dog run at the side of the house. Really makes no sense to me why they have this dog.

I've about had it, too, with my neighbor's two Boxers. They keep the dogs outside totally, and really don't show them any love. They refuse to put up a fence and use the collars that are with an RF system to deter going past the range of the transmitter. It's failed a few times and the dogs have come into my yard and rushed at me. This guy does not believe in positive reinforcement for training...only punishment and is such a poor pet owner. I'm also a dog owner...I have a Doberman. Yes, she barks occasionally (she's a dog, after all), but not like the neighbor dogs who will bark anytime I'm outside or even if the wind blows. One of these dogs bit one of the neighbor kids and the owner's response was to beat the dog. I hate to cause a neighborhood tiff, but, for the good of the animals AND my relief from the constant barking, I'm tempted to call the sheriff. I'm out of the city limits in a rural neighborhood with all the lots at least 2 acres. Enough allready!

Can't fix stupid i guess. Here is a clip of my neighbor's dog barking at 9 pm last night. It went on like this for over an hour and they didn't even open the door to say shut up. As you can hear it is NON STOP, ugh.

Depends on the dog. My son's neighbor had an Irish Wolf Hound that would bark too much. He would click the thing once and the dog was instantly silent.
I have two dogs, one dog responds instantly to it. The other dog doesn't respond at all.

That barking is painful and would keep me up.

Can you specify where in Austin you are? Feel free to PM me instead of posting publicly.

I finally called the cops and I was surprised that they cared and came out. He sat in his car listening and of course the dog was going crazy and he heard enough and knocked on their door. He said he would give them a warning and if it doesn't stop to call them back and he will come and write them a citation. I felt bad for calling but he said he could relate and that I shouldn't be disturbed in my own house.

I'm a little afraid of what my neighbors are going to do now. He sent me several texts asking if I called the cops. Oh well we will see what happens but I am relieved that I have some legal authority backing me up.

Use the old salesmans trick and answer questions with questions.

    "Did you call the cops?"
    "About what?"
    "My dog."
    "What about your dog?"
    "His barking."
    "Somebody called the cops?"
"They just came to the door."
    "What did they say?"

You can go all day. You could end it with you've lived with it so long, why would you call the cops now? ;)
