Hello All, I may be moving back east to the Somers NY area for work and would appreciate any insights you all might have as far the best (read most affordable) places to live. I've done some digging around in Danburry CT, White Plains and a couple of others. Compared to Colorado (where I'll be coming from) the housing prices are really high! $400K is entry level from what I've seen. I'd be looking in the $350 - $400K range. Any ideas that you may have would appreciated. Many thanks.
Why not in Somers or right near it? Cross River, Bedford, Salem are all really nice, countrified places, housing costs can be relatively low compared to more densely crowded suburban places in Westchester and Conn. I was riding my motorbike through that area early yesterday morning- if you are not looking for a McMansion, or a hacienda with mucho land for horsebreeding, I would think you could find a small country house at a reasonable price; i would also suspect that rentals up there could be pretty cheap.
Sounds like you work for IBM (a client of mine) and if you don't mind commuting a bit, you should be able to find a place to live. However, in that price range you aren't going to get much if anything worth looking at. Unfortunately prices in this area have escalated to points where $500k doesn't even buy you a condo/townhouse. Best bet is to contact a local broker or ask relocation services at your employer to hook you up with someone. Good Luck.
Hi, I have a business about 5 miles south of Somers, and you are right housing here is very expensive. You are right to look in the Danbury Ct area. If I can be of any help, let me know. Steve
993 Guy - you are correct, I do indeed work for IBM. Looks like the best prices to be had are about 45 mins from Somers into Connecticut (around Nagatuck, New Milford etc.). The commute wouldn't be to bad considering that my wife currently puts in an hour+ each way. Thanks all for the input, much appreciated!
The beauty of New Milford, Danbury and nearby towns is that it puts you that much closer to Lime Rock! Also a couple of good Ferrari shops in Gaylordsville. Another possibility about 45 minutes from Somers is Hopewell Junction, just north of I-84 in Dutchess County. I seem to recall seeing that town being on a list of high quality of life type towns. The mechanic for my Turner vintage race car lives there and it seems like a nice spot. Property taxes in Dutchess County I think are much better than in Westchester. John
If you need an agent for NY to show you around send me a PM and I will give you her info. Hopewell Junction is the sticks. Save yourself and live in CT and not NY, NY STATE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL!!!! Please tell us what you really think! I happen to prefer CT even though I work in NYC, so I understand where you are coming from. John
I live in Somers and they only thing you will find in that price range is a condo in Heritage Hills. You could find a small house in Mahopac or Carmel for that range but you probably won't be in the neighborhood that you are used to. If you have any questions you can pm me. I own a morgage company in White Plains and have some Real Estate contacts throughout the area if you need to use them.
I grew up in Somers (well, since I was 3) and saw it change....My parents have a 5 acre place on 202 about 1.5 miles from IBM (where I used to fly remote control planes and ride my dirt bike, including getting chased around by the IBM security Chevy S10 Blazers when they were building IBM!) Our house and land was 40K back in 1968....Now it is over 1mil !! I can't believe how expensive it has become.....I chose to build a place in Pawling when I moved out of my parents. You get a lot more for your money there and it is a 25 minute commute to IBM (I know because I pass the 116 entrance every day on my way to work) There are a lot of nice houses around that area (Pawling) for good prices. Kent (NY) has killer taxes so I would stay away from there! Somers, North Salem, South Salem, and south have become crazily priced. You have to go north..or to Ct. Dealing with I84 can be a pain at times going through Danbury. Gary
