My 308GT4 is in a well regarded indy shop for timing belts. What else do you guys think are mandatory?
The shop looks for any sign of seepage from the water pump. If so, new water pump. If not, they don't change it. I think the same for the tensioners.
How much extra work is it to put new tensioners on? I assume the parts are relatively cheap. Do I tell him to change out the tensioners regardless of their condition since I understand that if they go, so goes the belts (or at least the slip off and then goes the valves maybe). Thanks,

one last point: although the belt issue is often discussed on the forum. The last iteration of the discussion a couple weeks ago put me over the top and made me do it, since my car was in the shop for some carb work anyone.
so be patient towards the guys who don't do their own work and have limited budgets, but nonetheless love driving their older ferraris.

Change the tensioners whenever you change the belts. No discussion. And for the $200 for a rebuilt water pump, do that as well. Also have them check all hoses. If you do not know when the hoses were last changed, then just change all of them, especially the fuel hoses including the filler hose.

I didn't realize the water pump was so cheap. hard to believe a shop would charge only that for a ferrari water pump.

You don't replace the entire pump, just rebuild it with new bearings and a seal kit. Unless you upgrade to the later pump with bigger bearings.

These are some more tasks I would do, depending on what proof or knowledge of recent work you have:

    front crank seal (if weeping)
cam drive seals and outer bearings (if no records of replacement)
valve adjustment (unless it's been done recently) so off come the cam covers
requiring new cam cover gaskets, seals, etc

tensioners? yes- replace them, it's not any extra work, and the tensioning springs need inspection and lubrication anyway so you can apply correct tension during installation of new timing belts. In the bearing world, they are not cheap.

    And then the obvious things:
    new coolant
    new alt,AC, WP belts

These are just my opinions- jwise

Keep your engine clean as it is easy to see where the oil leak is comming from, IF you have leak of any kind.
