I guess it's hard to avoid the obstacles close to the runway when they have hooves. A few times I have been at places in Africa where standard procedure was to make a few low passes to ensure there was no wildlife on the runways.
Flew around Kenya in a Caravan; we always buzzed the runway before landing. I can see if a critter wandered out on takeoff; could be a huge problem.
Wow. I work with NOTAMs and we see stuff about animals around the airports in African countries all the time, but no giraffes yet (from my experience anyway). Usually wild dogs and birds. I think I'd be afraid to get out of the plane in some of these places
