contemplating bringing a car out to LV this spring during a visit ... are there nice drives within 1 hr of LV where you can open it up?... I assume there are some nice desert roads beyond the major gridlock of LV proper, but are they heavily patrolled, etc.? not interested in driving 2+hrs just to open it up.

There is plenty of desert out here for sure. Outside of town there is usually always some traffic on the 15 towards California until you get out of Nevada. One time I drove down to Laughlin in the morning, and I had my Corvette at 164mph for about 30 seconds still flooring it in 6th gear... the road was long straight and no cars for miles.

    The 95 South.

Both 93S (south of the Hoover Dam) and 95S offer some fairly open roads. 95S goes down into Laughlin which is somewhat interesting terrain. I was able to get up to 165mph on 93 in my F430 a few months ago.

You can also head north to the Valley of Fire State park. You probably won't want to speed in the park but the rock formations and colors make an interesting backdrop if you're interested in getting some photos (many car manufacturers shoot their commercials in the park because of the winding roads, interesting terrain, and spectacular colors). You should hit the park before sunset to really get the effect.

For a more leisurely drive, you can go up to Red Rock Canyon and drive the loop. Again, you won't be able to go fast but it's a nice drive none the less. Finally, you can head out over towards Pahrump...the road there is nice for opening up...and you can see if there's anything happening at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park...maybe you can get your car on the track.

My recommended drive - head towards Lake Mead, go to Lake Mead recerational park, head towards Overton. Takes less than 30 minutes from the Strip to get to - roads are windy, wide open, smooth (for much of the area), scenic, turn left through Valley of Fire, then to I-15. Just over 80 miles. If you go early in the morning, hardly any traffic (particularly on weekdays). Not a stop sign in sight for hours and some very fast driving and enjoyable opportunities. Lake Mead is patrolled by rangers, but the way the roads lays provides decent opportunities to see them before calamity. (Radar detector also needed.) Be careful of the roads between Valley of Fire and I-15 - there are rolling "hills" and washes; possibility of bottoming at higher speeds.

The drive Thusly described is a good one. We usually do it in the reverse order; I-15 to Valley of Fire first, then the North Shore Road (which is route 167 on Chase's map) back to Lake Las Vegas. But it works either way.

One caution: when our club did it in late December, there were a couple of stretches on the NSR where re-paving was in progress, and we had to slow down to a crawl. So you probably should try to check the status of any road work in advance.

If you take Charleston all the way West, you can hit the Red Rock loops for a drive on the way up, and then turn right on the way out. If you want to go to Pahrump, make a right at the end of the road, go over the mountain, and there is a nice downhill section going to Pahrump where you can go pretty fast, and see anything a long ways ahead (NHP maybe). On the way back, don't turn back onto what was Charleston, but stay straight for Blue Diamond Rd.
