In view of the current Southwest Airlines melt down, it looks like a total overhaul of the entire system is in order. This is the worst mess ever.

    Bob,

Its my understanding that the Southwest operational management system failed to handle what started as a ramp agent outage in Denver. That cascaded into a complete failure that required a reset since the system was not capable of handling the avalanche of ensuing change transactions.

It has been a long time since I worked on Sabre and Apollo but those systems were complicated enough that they required their own operating system version of MVS to work on IBM's mainframes. I can't imagine how more complex they are now with the Federal requirements of crew hours being added into the mix. Having to know and calculate the remaining hours/location/equipment is not a trivial task.

Even United gave up on Apollo and uses Sabre now.

Allegedly.....Southwest management basically made the call to let all the crews reset so that they could restart the system. I'm sure that they will be spending some big IT money now to shore it up.
