recently had my 85qv power flushed. no problem prior but been running hot ever since. have tried bleeding rad several times to no avail. thinking debris has affected thermosat. will try bleeding engine next. what is entailed in replacing therm. have seached but not much on the actual process. has anyone used the vw part recommended in the parts sticky. read an old post about a chevy part, sounds fishy. haven't actually measured the coolant temp. will check that next.

The thermostat could be causing the problem but I kind of doubt it. I think the VW part in the other thread your talking about is actually the switch in the radiator that turns the fans on. Have you checked to make sure the fans are turning on? If so the first thing I'd do is properly bleed the whole system (not just the radiator). See Verell's excellent explanation here... http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=135067366&postcount=25

If that doesn't solve it then start looking at other sources.

Just going by what you have mentioned. I have power flushed many times before and sometimes, old block casting/rust can break free and get stuck in the thermostat. This can cause the thermostat to be stuck open and cause overheating. So check the thermostat for sure. Maybe you just have a nasty airlock in the engine block? Have had that before also. Good luck mate. :)

You have to bleed it at both ends (engine and radiator) or it will run hot.

You should still buy the "performance" VW fan switch. It just turns the fans on a little earlier.

Rick...super easy job. Call Ricambi and tell him you need a new thermostat (comes with o-ring gasket IIRC) and you'll also need a new thermostat housing gasket. You'll want to completely drain your whole system (rad and engine) and start from scratch.

Call me if you have any questions...

    hi there,

not been on here in a while...

Ive had a similar problem with my QV engined Mondial, im i right in thinking if the thermostat is stuck closed, the water won't flow to the rad?? hence the engine will get hotter and hotter until something goes bang??

    thanks

Yes, but this is pretty uncommon. They tend to stick open. If it is stuck shut, the radiator should not get hot, so it is very easy to test.
