Drove F40 to car show today.

She's a blast on nice fast roads but given even a little traffic for short time she drops down to 4 cyl. After she cools off she's back to 8

Thought it was overheating fuel pumps, swapped those, same problem.

    Panty ideas? Thnx

Has the car got cats? A cat overheating can trigger the ECU to switch off 1 bank of cylinders. A red dashboard light should come on. The cat may not be faulty, and it could be a faulty cat temperature probe or the electronic unit that the probe plugs in to.

If it is a non cat car, each bank of cylinders has a separate ECU, so either an ECU has an
intermittent fault, or some input to the ECU is causing it to shut down.

When the car goes into 4 cylinder mode, remove and replace the fuses for the injectors or the fuel pumps to determine which is acting up. Normally this will solve the problem immediately. You can also check the electronic Box under the rear bonnet and clean the connections since they are directly under an air vent which leaks water on it when wet.
