getting a container from Europe could be had for less than $2000, rates constantly vary depending on demand... "packing" the car in the container properly for safe passage is very important...there is a base rate for the container, transport to port charges, port charges, insurance, loading fees, customs fees before it leaves, then on arrival there are port charges, custom fees, etc... a lot going on, for a one time shipment get a shipping broker to do it for you... all will be taken care of and delivered to you at your front door... there is roll (drive) on / roll off service on ships designed soley for car transport...the car is in the open much like in a parking garage, being open / unprotected incidental damage can occur... there are options for the type of service...airfreight is very good but at 2+ times the cost, for almost same day service. A lot depends on value of the car and a "what if" happens in the way of incidental damage in the way the car is handled with the type of service is selected

I used http://www.schumachercargo.com/ to Oslo, Norway and was very pleased.

It was about 3K with transportation to Port Elizabeth, NJ, that included insurance and believe was a dedicated container. I chose Schumacher as they had agents/representatives in Oslo and used them in the past.

Martin runs a great shop at Cosdel. I second this recommendation from personal experience. Also a satisfied customer.

Ro-Ro is the cheapest way, and have had never any issues with it, but it depends on what kind of car it is, when it has a low floor-clearance, brought a little Alfa last year to Brugge Belgium to wallenius where the car was put with new Maserati's destination the US, I do not think that Maserati would use RORO when it was not save.
*You need an agent here in europe
*A save transporter to the docks
*And a good agent in the States
I can help you with the first 2 things.

Another satisfied customer! Although I fly them as I am concerned of car sitting in shipyards and containers being lost ( or thrown in the rough sea, saw it to prevent sinking of the carrier..). Insurance for total loss is actually I found very expensive though in regards of perceived limited risk of shipping by plane.
