So I picked up my car from a well known high-end body shop in Northern Illinois after my rear bumper suffered a small scratch. I was told 2-3 weeks, then finally picked it up after 6 weeks... I wasn't too upset about the timeframe since I wanted it done right and didn't want it rushed.

So I pick up the car, take it home and park it. 2 weeks go by and I decide to wash it. ENTIRE CAR IS COVERED IN OVERSPRAY!!! I can't believe a body shop that specializes in only high-end cars like this would even let the car leave being in the condition its in.

That being said, its been a nightmare situation with them returning phone calls and emails and I don't even want to deal with them anymore.

Does anyone have any feedback as to the steps to remove the overspray? I just applied Zymol the week before it went in and the car was immaculate, now it feels like sandpaper.

Try a clay bar before you get too far down the path of wet sanding.

Sometimes the adhesion of the overspray is poor if your car was just picking up residual in the air from being in a paint shop can, overspray from them painting your own bumper.

IMO if you are trying to do this yourself you could start with a clay and detail spray.
Then if that fails try WD40 and clay.
Then Bug and Tar remover....let is soak a little bit.

Just do a small section in a non noticeable area to start.

Also note to be extra cautious with removal of the overspray from any rubber seals and plastics.

After that, hopefully another member can advise.
Maybe some professional paint chemicals like reducer or a thinner.

The overspray, if from just being in a shop environment should come off fairly easily.

Last suggestion is a professional detailer and polishes with a machine.
IMO most professional detailers have seen this situation before.

As for cost reimbursement from the original shop...I wish you luck.
I too would be hesitant to have them remove the overspray as their reputation may not be deserved.

    Again, good luck.

To the extent that the Zymol was still on the car when it was hit by the overspray, the paint is probably not adhering well and should be fairly easy to remove by a clay bar (or maybe even alcohol). Unfortunately, the body shop probably stripped all wax off the car in the area around the bumper so that may require polishing or wet sanding.

Send it for paint correction - may help! Then ceramic coat it after.

Do not do anything yourself to the car.

It has been damaged by the body shop and that damage needs to be documented by a professional first! Then turn over the damage assessment to your lawyer and have him approach the body shop.

If you touch the car you will lose your chance to claim and you may make the damage even worse!

    Regards,

FWIW, everyone of my Ferraris save for my current spider had some sort of repair done. Usually poor repairs AND overspray issues just to add insult to injury. Italy or port, who knows? The worst was my 430. Overspray everywhere. Especially inside driver's side doorsill. Car almost looked like it had a matte finish before they were in vogue. The reason was the rear quarter had been resprayed and it is likely they only covered the door. So, lots of overspray in the aforementioned area. My other cars usually had it all over the top of the car.
In every case, even where overspray thick, the clay bar and liquid detailer (Griot's Garage clay bar and "Speed Shine") worked flawlessly.
I get the legal issues if you really screw with buffing, chemicals, etc. But, the clay bar is completely safe as is the liquid detailer as no grit to harm the surface. You will not pull off any "real" paint with a clay bar.

I appreciate everyone's comments. I spent 1 day clay barring the car and the next day reapplying Zymol. The car is good as new now.

Just frustrating that these 'professional' shops allow the cars to leave this way. It's just a lack of quality control.

Really glad for the happy ending.
In so many things, quality takes a back seat.

Why would car have overspray in the 1st place...i managed shops for yrs and on a exotic in for a bumper scratch the procedure is as follow :
    Remove bumper
Pull car in the delivery area with 5mil plastic over it
Repair scratch, do spray out card on color and make sure its dead on....spray bumper, lightly de-nib any imperfections and polish. Pull car from delivery area, reinstall bumper, check match again, detail and deliver

Maybe a good time to take for a full detail with the body being mopped. Dealer just mopped my car completly (took 10 hours) after ballsing up the paintwork and it now shines with no swirles or frosting or marks like new....
