I recently bought a 2014 458 Spider. It seems that the Owners Manual has never been used - but on opening it I found that it appears to be soaked in an oily fluid. The only explanation I can think of is that the pages are plasticised and that the plastic element has become unstable. I've tried wiping the pages and exposing them to the atmosphere in the expectation that they might dry out - but this has been unsuccessful. Has anyone else experienced the same problem??

Totally weird. I recently have owned a 2015 Speciale Aperta, my manual never used or maybe it was....., its just as they made it.....hence....some glue is drying out.....can't think of any oil in the area.........pages being plasticised.....very unlikely.....LOVE it all!

your owners manual appears to be soaked in an oily fluid because someone spilled an oily fluid on it

    Maybe it's brake fluid?
If someone was doing the brake fluid and your manual was in the frunk, it's possible that they may have spilled a little on there.

I like that however the brake fluid would obliterate that paper in the manual in the frunk if they ever met contact.

Probably true, but you never know. It's strange how it eats through some things but not others. For instance, it destroys paint VERY quickly, but not the plastic bottle, or rubber brake lines or seals in the calipers.

I helped my friend change his fluid last year, and used the Motive pressure bleeder. It wound up getting a pin hole leak in the tubing even though we pressurized it without fluid just to check it!!! (lesson learned...change hoses every 5 years even if they are perfect). Thankfully we are super careful, and covered the car with blankets, however, it still soaked through the blanket by the time we were able to notice it and got it on the bottom of the frunk. The carpet at the bottom of the frunk, and the leather document binder got fluid on it as well. We took the carpet out and washed it, and washed the leather binder, and neither had any signs of damage. I feel like we dodged a HUGE bullet, but the moral of the story, is that you never know what materials will be affected by brake fluid. Of course, I always assume it will destroy EVERYTHING when I handle it.
All that said, I have no idea how it would affect paper, and ink on paper.
