I should first discuss. I like Oysters from as North and Cold of water as possible. They taste the best to me. I eat them with lemon juice, cocktail sauce, and horseradish. Beer or Coca-Cola with them gives just the hydration I like. If I drink it with Beer I usually go with anything that is on special. I try and eat them at least twice a month but its not always that often...sometimes more. Prince Edward Island Raspberry Points are my favorites so far. Would love to try cultured oysters if they exist.
Yum! Yum. Florida's gulf coast has great oysters. Stay away from the oysters here in the Rocky Mountains.
I only eat them when I go to down to NC. Oysters in MI this time of year is something I would not want to experiment with. I'l eat them with anything, but love em with some good hot sauce.
Most places ship around oysters from all over the country and world. Lets keep the discussion rolling!
Prince Edward Island Raspberry Points are my favorites so far. Those are mine as well. There is a very good Oyster bar in Ludwigs Corner PA ( Chester Springs PA ,Near Philly) that has about 15 different types of oysters and the quality is always good. I try and eat there when I am in PA.
Tomales Bay Oysters and mussels only because they are small and delicate and LOCAL, but could name better varieties. http://www.tomalesbayoysters.com/ rik
I love oysters. Every Sat. in the winter I go to a local place for stew. Double oysters. They scald the milk and it cooks the oysters in the bowl. Then butter and cayenne. Each bowl made fresh, individually. Acme on Bourbon St. was a stop every day, sometime twice. Burlap bags of oysters behind the bar and I sarcasticly asked him if there fresh. He says "They alive, but I'm gonna kill him for you.
my favorites. long island blue points, chincoteagues and since we get them here for $2.00 a dozen i do like the nice cold appalachicola.
Just had a dozen PEI's and I must say they are always so dang satisfying. Has anyone had Waweenauk (sp?) oysters? These are some big ass bi-valves but they are also not that flavorful. A dozen Waweenauks is almost a full meal no joke! To the one that prefers small local CA oysters...those look amazing and I too like little oysters that I can eat in higher quantity but I have heard terrible things about west coast oysters and asian oysters because of water quality where they live. Care to comment or change what I have heard?
We serve them all kind of ways, Raw, Fried, in gumbos, in dressings and my farorite chargrilled with a garlic butter sauce. YUM I do have to say, it was a brave or very hungry person who opened one up and ate it.
I agree. I would love to know who thought to eat them raw first. I must say that I bet it was safer then than it is now but I can't stop anyway!
I think I'm about the only person in New Orleans who doesn't not like raw oysters. It just seems like eating slime to me. But I like them just about any other way though.
I really only like them raw... served with mingonette sauce... lemon and with Champagne!!! little toast with butter or crusty bread... epi works best!
Interesting article in The Economist not too long ago about oysters and their role in the ocean that I thought I'd share. http://www.economist.com/world/unitedstates/displaystory.cfm?story_id=12795573 Raspberry Points and Watch Hills are personal faves. If you're ever around Grand Central in NYC, swing by the Oyster Bar for a very impressive selection...
Guys I have another I love: Pickle Points. I believe these are found in the same water as the Raspberry Points and according to various online sources they are just not as popular because there is such a huge craze over the Raspberry Points. The Pickle Point oyster is skinny and long and looks JUST LIKE A PICKLE. Its awkward trying to get it out of the shell but it is a spectacular oyster nonetheless.
Worlds best oyster recipe: you need: 24 or so raw chilled oysters shallow ramican Tabasco (Optional) Caviar spoon 1 bottle very smoky single malt Scotch. ( I use Lagavulin) Shuck the oysters at least two at a time fill the shallow ramican with Scotch spoon in a bit of the scotch in to the oysters and then shuck two more. once the secound two are shucked, eat the first two. The effect is you give the oysters a smoked and cooked taste with out the cooking!!! Its awesome!
I don't like them cooked or not. My dad says I loved them when I was young and he would feed them to me raw. I think that when I was small I wanted them b/c I saw him eating them.
I've never actually had an oyster, raw or cooked. I'm sure I wouldn't like them though. I don't even like sushi or other seafood except for some types of fish. Hmmmm. I don't know ..
we enjoy great oysters here in n.e.,but i love the apalachacolas [sp?] down south ...delicious and cheap !!
Don't knock it, til you try it. My advice to any new comers to eating raw oysters, would be cocktail sauce and saltine crackers. Put the oyster on the cracker top with cocktail sauce. The cracker helps offset the texture of the oyster and the sauce adds alittle flavor, but doesn't change the taste of the oyster. you should give it a shot. the problem most people have with them is in their head, they can't get past the look, texture and the fact they're raw. Try the crackers and have beer to chase it with. Good Luck
