The accumulator is in the valley underneath the inlet manifold plenum chamber - no need to remove the cam covers.

The inlet manifold is in three parts: left bank tract, right bank tract, and plenum. You may find that there's sufficient access if removing the plenum and one side of the tracts.

If you decide to replace the accumulator then don't forget replacement inlet manifold gaskets, and O clips for the throttle body bellows and vacuum hoses.

That's it Mike. Just a single M6 Allen screw. Worth replacing the O ring before refitting.

Another thing to check would be wiring continuity between the sensor and ECU, and the variator solenoids and ECU.

Mark, can you educate us of what exactly that accumulator does. I thought it just supplied oil to variators on start up. Thanks

Any accumulator is a store of pressure, think of it being fitted in a pressure line on a T piece, as the pressure initially drops, the reserve pressure in the accumulator comes into play to minimise any drop in pressure. As the system pressure recovers to normal the accumulator returns to its 100% reserve capacity.

The one thing that does not make sense to me is the fact that both banks are showing the timing. To me that signals it is unlikely the mentioned sensor. It would need to be something that affects both sides like a slightly lower oil pressure affecting the timing solenoids to see correct pressure and signal cam to advance:(

The accumulator is common to both banks.
