I had one of the small coolant lines from the tank to the water pump on my 96 355 start to leak. I replaced the hose. No problem.

After I replaced the hose I washed the coolant off of the front of the motor. Probably not too smart. Car runs perfect. Except, when I take a hard right turn. The motor skips, CEL and SLow down light come for a few seconds then go off. Then car goes back to normal. My assumption is that a connector got wet. Fuel is 3/4 tank.

I checked the code, P0336 (crankshaft position sensor A). I cleared the code. Drove it again and I get the same thing. Only on a hard right turn. Crazy.

So, I plan on replacing or at least getting under it and checking the connections. My question:

Are there two of these sensors, A & B? Are they both located on the front of the engine around the A/C compressor? Does this look like the right part, and should I get one or two?

Thanks, I just want to make sure I have what I need when I get into it.

Looks like it. You might try just blowing out the connectors with compressed air.

...agreed. To take it a little bit further, grease the connector well with dielectric prior to reassembly to help fend off water incursion in the future. <$10 at a chain auto parts store for a large tube.

Just to clarify, you don't want to apply dielectric grease to the contacts themselves since it is an insulator. Just use it to help seal the connector housings.

Ernest, make sure you also clean the face of the sensor and check the pulley (sensor pickup teeth) and see if it's clean also.

thanks guys. I may put it on the lift tomorrow and see what is going on. So there is only one sensor? i saw a 348 video that was showing two.

I just finished up my FJ40 restoration and was hoping to catch a break from auto repairs for a little while. Oh well.

Yes, the 5.2 has only one. The 2.7 has 2

FJ looks great! I believe you've just about hit opposite ends of the spectrum of reliability with the Toyota and the Ferrari, though :D

Thought I would update this thread. I went ahead and ordered a new cps sensor and after a couple of weeks it arrived. When I replaced it my connector was filled with antifreeze. My old sensor was probably still good, but the cable seemed very stiff and it looked as if it was the original sensor. Seems to have solved my problem. BTW, the sensor came from amazon, and was exactly the same as the one I removed.

I recently began seeing coolant dripping from the front of my motor near the crank sensor and it caused the same P0336 code.
I'm taking it to the shop to have the coolant leak repaired, but think I might just change the sensor anyway since it's cheap.

Is it easily accessible from underneath the car?
Does anything need to be removed to access the sensor?
After replacing the sensor and fixing your leak the issue has not returned?

    Thanks!

Easy to replace. Connection was filled with antifreeze. Probably could have blown it out and been fine. No problems since. I would just unplug it and dry it out.

My issue turned out to be a chaffed wire in the speed sensor harness connection i guess- The car was giving P0336 as pending code because it thought it had something to do with the crankshaft position sensor but it didn't, they did however also change that, and the mass airflow sensor i believe and now issue is solved
