Ok, they've been out for a while and I've tried a few but which positioning do you find easier, moving with the steering wheel or mounted on the steering column ?

I find the paddles hard to use properly when they move with the steering wheel and at the expense of being called a troglodyte I still prefer drivetrain tunnel mounted gearchanges

I've got paddles that move on the E63 and GL500 and don't use them at all as there seems no point and it's just marketing. Hop in the LP600 on the track with the same set up and it's perfect. I guess driving at pace makes it worthwhile.

Suits some cars more than others.

Best suited to anything that has a sudden flare of revs, such as a big output turbo approaching redline or a high revving naturally aspirated IMO.

The DSG is quicker, but is that all that it's about? Of course not. For me I would have to really drive both to decide.

Where and at what time you drive is a major determinant. Peak hour traffic up here is rooted.

At low speeds, the DSG just isnt smooth enough to use in manual mode. Better to let the thing change up and down by itself... the shunting from the box gets very tedious... Manual please :D

They are both good - just different.

Most cars with moving paddles also have a shifter between the seats and most cars with fixed paddles don't.

Nicole's Statesman has little ones mounted on the steering wheel.

It's a CRAP and SLOW shift change, but I use that system when climbing hills in it when needed while travelling on holidays. It's only a V6 engine and needs to drop down the gears to climb more easliy, especially with a car full of crap.

When we visted Klink the other day, I used it beautifully driving up and down the ranges. *Saves the brakes driving down the ranges also, they overheat quickly in her car* You can't just pull the shifter down into 1,2 or 3 because it still upshifts when it hits a certain RPM. When you press the button to engage "paddles", the ECU for the transmission allows it to hold it's shifts till you change gears via the paddles.

Now, I found it VERY annoying being mounted on the steering wheel because I kept going back to where the column mounted paddles would be in a Ferrari.

I have driven many F1 Ferraris over the years, the last time being Febuary this year and my hands still reach out for the column mounted paddles like in the Ferraris while driving Nicole's car.

Also in saying that, I am sure you would get used to them mounted on the steering wheel. Like the buttons for the indicators on the steering wheel of the 458. I am sure Scud and Mhh are used to that now feature with their cars.

If I had to make a choice though, it would be non-moving paddles in my car thankyou.

Sorry guys. What I mean is, that I think cars that have a really quick approach to redline are best suited to paddles. Things like modern big turbos and/or really quick naturally aspirated cars. IMO.

Strange as it sounds, but my MG has a 1930's paddle shift.
No clutch but bands which move gears which are always turning.
A very fast change ,i can go up or down through the gears quicker then any manual car I've driven.
The gear stick has all the gears in a straight pattern, rather then a period H one.
I can select a gear before i have engaged it ie be in 2nd but already have the stick in 3rd and just hit the pedal and its engaged and vs versus changing down.At the lights be in 1st gear on the stick, put still be in neutral.
Little wonder they were so successful in racing, the draw back is weight of the gearbox and drag ,far more then a convential box.

from tanks in WW1 to lago talbot grand prix cars to buses in the 70s and also boats.
MG only used it for a couple of years as the supercharged cars were banned from the class they raced in and MG quit racing.
called a Wilson pre-select gearbox, there is a lot on the Net about them.
This Tiger would have had a Wilson pre-select.

I have both set ups now. Fixed paddles with decent length is the best by far.
