Anbody have had used a good body shop for wheel refinish? I need to respray 2 of my magnesium wheels, one has a slight 1/4" paint chip on the edge that I think it needs some bondo filling before spraying. I was thinking of KellyMoss in Madison. Anyone has any other recommendation? I have called Transwheel in Chicago, but they don't wanna do Mag wheels. Any recommendation is much appreciated!

I think Bill is pretty tight with the guys from Collectors Choice LTD..if that's still the name of the shop. They would probably be capable or at least know a lead.

You'll probably want to media blast (glass, plastic, nutshell...not sand) them down to bare metal and then start the respray.

    Good luck.

there is a shop in my neck of the woods that does wheel refinishing only. I could run over there this week and ask them how much they would charge. from what i have seen they do really good work.

Thanks for the lead, can you ask if they do Magnesium wheels refinish, nothing structurally. It is all surface respray, and a little bit of surface bondo to fill in the paint chip. Thanks!

BAM, hey thanks for trying. I really appreciate it! I called kellymoss, they said they will take a look, but the snow storm that passed through here made traveling tough the last couple days.

You know, there are lots of parts on airplanes made of magnesium. The stuff isnt rocket science. There are chemicals you can buy from a paint shop, like NAPA, that can strip the wheel and prepare the wheel for new paint. Its been a while, but its kind of like aluminum and needs to be etched IIRC with mild acid, then neutralised. Probably would work best on a stand so you dont have to touch it and get fingerprints on it after its stripped and cleaned. Once its prepared, you need a good base primer coat, then an appropriate wheel paint. I painted some 560 rims on a Mercedes with a can of spray paint from the dealer. If I did it again I would probably have a paint shop mix something. If you take your time you can make it look good as new and save yourself $$$$$$$$$$ for other things.
