So I purchased my 2007 430 spider about 3 months ago. It had 12,000 miles on it was was in about the most perfect shape of any 5 year old car I have seen. I examined the front bumper, front fender, and hood for any paint chips and was amazed to fine less than 3 or 4 very small ones. FYI only the bumper has a clear bra. So now I have been thrilled with the car over the summer and have almost 14,500 miles. After washing the car yesterday I was horrifyed to see hundreds of tiny chips all over the front fenders and hood. Most were smaller than a grain of salt. However another 10 or so were larger, like the size of a dull pencil tip. I can't understand how either the previous over was able to keep it so perfect with driving 2,000 per year, living only a few miles from me, OR I have been able to cause so much damage this summer. Was it possible that the dealer was able to detail the car to the point where I didn't notice any of this? I am fairly careful not to tailgate or drive behind any trucks on the highway.

    Any thoughts?

Or were portions of the car resprayed prior to you purchasing it?

Sounds like you didn't notice them if you've been careful. If you do the math and take total mileage and consider what you've put on the car you probably added 17% or so of them.(if that) Touch up the bigger ones plus you may want to snoop around the dealer and see how their detailer was able to cover them before? I'd be curious what tricks they would have used?

Following distance and the kind of vehicle ahead of you have a lot to do with it.

Could have been resprayed (not a bad thing). In my experience, resprayed paint tends to chip more.

I would consider having it resprayed and then clear bra it. The downside of this is that when you take off the clearbra, it probably will pull off the paint over the chips.

Is this the 1st time you've washed it? Most likely the dealer used a glaze if they detailed before you took delivery. It has oils in it and can hide or lessen the effect of the peppering on the hood and fenders. It's just from hitting things over time like tiny pieces of sand while you're driving. problem is that it washes off pretty quickly.
Can't explain the few larger chips though. perhaps after noticing the peppering, you examined the car more thoroughly than before?

I had the same thing happen on a CPO BMW. Turned out that the front end had been resprayed. You csan probably get a paint meter on it and tell quickly, if you didn't have it during a PPI.

When I bought my 08 Scud with 6,800 miles, I asked about a respray (I thought at least on the bumper) because there were no chips or marks either (black car). Dealer told me that the car came in with a full front clear bra that was a few years old and was not in the best shape so the dealer removed it before putting the car on the floor. Maybe you had the same situation and they just applied a new front bumper clear bra?

Was the third or fourth wash. I really don't think it was re-sprayed. I'll try to do a full detail this week with a glaze and see how it looks.

Exactly! It probably had a full hood, bumper, and fenders clear bra, and they only left the bumper on for whatever reason.

I doubt it would look like it currently does in 2,500 miles? The OP said he was careful to keep a distance. If a clear bra was removed it would look pristine.

detailing won't really help small chips.

you can order the dr chip kit and improve the look without a respray.

then, i would let it cure for 30 days and clear bra the front.

most likely, the car was under clear bra and they peeled part of it off due to age.

definitely stay away from other cars on freeway and gravel roads.

I only had 5-6 small chips on my car when I decided to make a road trip to SC. Mileage round trip was over 1700 miles on straight flat roads. Apparently the roads were full of rocks as well bc I had over 200 chips when I returned home. I am not happy. If I had driven in the mountains or had a blast on the trip I wouldn't be whining. It was black with dead bugs before I reached Jacksonville.

I've been driving it without a wash often and haven't taken as much pride in it since. I don't cry over a rock chip or scrape here and there but this is out of hand.

There are too many to fill in. I've priced an entire front repaint for around $4k by a local guy who does a great job on exotics. He has a great rep. I'm going to break down and do it soon.

I know some guys hate the clear bra, but the new material is so good now! If you have a good installer, you can hardly tell it's on.

Well worth the money to do a full front hood.

I agree. As soon as my Scud came home, I had it re-applied - in addition to the full front, I had the lower sides and mirror backs (to protect the CF) done also. Sure, you can tell it's there if you look carefully, but, it's much cheaper than a repaint down the road.

So I have come to the conclusion that there must have been a clear bra on the entire hood and fenders and the dealer did pull it off for some reason. I did a full detail this weekend and djantlive was right... didn't help. I also tired Dr. Colorchip as you can see in the pictures also did not help. So now the question is do I bother to clear bra the full hood and fenders before is gets worse? I really am going to drive this thing, and am not overly concerned with the look. However, at this rate, in a year or two I can image how bad it will look if I do nothing. I have a quote of $1,500 for a custom 3M bra for the full front including the mirrors, door handles, rocker panels and the spot on the rear bumper behind the wheels.

I have had different opinions on whether or not the clear bra will make the small chips worse. Don't really want to spray the entire front.

    Any thoughts?

The chips that are off colored need to be lightly touched up. The clear bra will smooth over any of the small pitting. I have installed film over pitting before because the client didnt want to repaint the vehicle. It does help hide any small pits... but again anything that has gone through ther paint and the primer/body panel is showing needs to be lightly touched up.
