    Anyone had this before?

Ive got a 355 with standard wheels, but Ive never had this on any of my cars before.

About a week ago I noticed a small crack in the power coat on the right rear wheel, made a mental note to get it sorted out in the new year when she goes to have a bunch of other stuff done.

Today I go out, and notice massive CHUNKS of paint on the floor, from ALL wheels :|

This is on the spokes, on the inside rim everywhere, and theres exposed alloy everywhere!

What can cause this, any ideas? The guy I bought it from said they were refurbished only a month or so before I bought it.

She does sit outside in the cold (no garage until next month, long story) but shes covered, could it be the cold??

In the meantime, anyone in the UK got any nice wheels they wanna sell? I need the car over Xmas and I wouldnt wanna drive it as it is with clouds of debris coming off the wheels

    Thanks

Sounds like the wheels were not prepped properly----they are magnesium and require a bit different process than steel, aluminum wheels

Ahhh i didnt know they were mag wheels!

So perhaps the guys that did them didnt know either and used an alloy process or something.

    Sucks :(

I'm surprised if they couldn't figure it out. First they are lighter, and the raw material looks different than aluminum alloy. This is good to know as three of the 4 that I just bought need refinishing.

    Good luck, post some pics!

Make sure that they are painted on the inside (between the rims) as some of these wheels are porous. If not painted the pressurized air will work through the casting and pop off the paint.

Yep, they did a sh*t job with them sadly!:rolleyes:

Dan, perhaps call the guy who you bought the car from and ask him who refinished the wheels and give them a call and tell them whats happend. They may repair them for you at their expense. :):)

Very poor workmanship IMO. But perhaps they didnt know they were magnesium??

Magnesium needs to be cleaned and prepped properly for the paint to stick. A lot more involved than painting normal alloy wheels.

    Thanks for the response guys.

I contacted him already, hes give me thier details so Im going to call them up and see what they are prepared to do about it, he said they were quite expensive to get done as he went to a "reputable" firm, but as far as he was concerned the best would only do...heh ironic!

I have refinished 355 wheels with no issues of any kind so I am really surprised to hear of the problem you are having.
Can you post some pictures of the wheels so we can see the condition of the metal where its flaking?

Dan, I had a set wet painted and some powder coated elsewhere. You also need to get the correct colour, Argento FER 101

You could give Roger a ring here, http://www.thewheelrestorer.co.uk/home.html

He can strip and powder coat a base then wet paint and lacquer to give a good finish but specify your requirements.
