Having my bumper redone as car has been put away for the Winter. Car is 2003 Modina Rossa C. Base paint I believe per Ferrari is PG, brand?? What clearcoat is used?? The reason I asked is I've been told this is the same brand as MB uses and people had had issues with that brand clearcoat darkening the finish.

PPG......a clear coat does alter the appearance but is required.

You have to account for that in the sub coat formulation, They'll match it perfectly on your newer car, no worries.

The entire paint system will be the same brand, from primer thru color thru clear coat. That will avoid the problems you are concerned about.

Gary- The factory workshop manuals have detailed instructions on how to apply the paint and what to use. There are different procedures for aluminum and plastic panels, IIRC.

Absolutely, the plastic gets a "flex additive"....I understand your concern and the disparity in materials DOES make a challenge for the painter, don't misunderstand that.

I have a Trans Am (1994) that has flexible plastic nose and fenders, GRP doors, steel rear 1/4 panels and roof, and aluminum alloy wheels. When I asked a paint supply house to digital scan and make me up some rattle cans for touch up, the lady walked out and said:

"WHICH color white would you like me to match?"

And she was correct...it's hard to do. So don't crucify your painter, it's just the nature of the beast........

I believe that Ferrari made to the switch to PPG Cermaclear (the same stuff as Mercedes Benz) in '05.

Its typically best to stick with the same companies for both the base and clears (in this case PPG)...... but, as was mentioned
some clears do darken the basecoat a bit, what can be done is (and i think this is right), you can slightly alter the overall
color using a higher psi to spray (and lower to darken).

But best thing for them(you)do to is use something the size of a license plate, spray the base and clear to sample so you can
see the results before they do the bumper... (just a suggestion).

Greetings... PPG Global is currently being used by Ferrari at the factory. The clear is applied is a charged powder coat process then baked. Shop cannot replicate that process so here is some insite. What happens is they make the base coat by using the paint code which in turn gives the painter the exact measurements of colors to make up your color. Now in saying that they may be a few different variations of that particular color depending on how may times in that year your color was put into production. If corsa red (and so on) where put into production three or four time then you would have 3-4 variations of the same color. Painter then uses tint colors obtain closest match. Keep in mind as the years pass the color changes from weather / use etc. I fully agree on spaying a test panel but do it on the same type of material. Paint tends to cure differently on urethane plastic vs. sheetmetal. It always seems to darken when cured and as it gets older. The clears can have some effect but if a quality clear, reducer, and hardener are being used (prefer to be same paint system) you should be o.k.. Cheep and nock off clears usually give off a nasty tint. The key is making the base coat and knowing how your clear is going to react. Some shops blend into the fenders and hood but that is painting more than you bargain for and could really effect the value of your car because you shot the nose. Mercedes Benz to my knowledge have always used Glasuirit Paint System. They as well as PPG, Spies Hecker, Sikkens are the top paint systems. Primers (can be colored) could also play a role of color variation when the base is applied. I prefer to add some base color to the primer or matching the original primer tint to achieve better coverage results. Air pressure in the gun could also change things up also as well as ambient temperature. So in review: Need a shop that uses a good quality paint system - base coat and clear coat, experienced painter (that know how to tint colors and has a good hand to spray, use flex, quality down draft or cross draft CLEAN (and clean being important) spray boothe. You should be fine. Bumper should also be removed, detrimmed (if any trim) and sprayed off the car. Hope this info helps. Keep in mind your bumper finish will never be as durable as from the factory.

Thanks Rob, I wish I would have protected the bumper better and had no issues with chips. At least no problems on hood etc. Don't look for a show car, but want it nice. Thanks again for the imput.
